The iPod won't get bluetooth. It's not in the PIXO agreement. However, a device for playing digital audio, interpersonal communication, and other organization functions that makes use of Wi-FI (AirPort), Bluetooth, FireWire of course, Cellular, GPRS technology, and some others is all a part of it.

It's coming... I would be so stoked if it were coming in the next few weeks, but I doubt it. Probably just Bluetooth standard on some Mac model or another?and more than likely one of the portables, both of which are overdue for an update, conveniently.

Addison hits the nail on the head. David Pogue is undoubtedly smart enough not to break any NDAs, especially not with Apple. All of his work (writing books and writing for the NY Times) relies on friendly relations with hard- and software companies.

I see only one other scenario, but I think it's an unrealistic conspiracy theory: A person of authority at Apple actually permitted Pogue to alude to upcoming Apple hardware to create a buzz in the press. We know from past experience that controlled leaks are not part of Apple's m.o. and I doubt they are for this. Otherwise Apple might as well have leaked to the mainstream press.

But Palm has made no official announcement about the Tungsten hardware. It's expected "in the next two weeks." Sounds familiar.

Most likely, he is only making the point that bluetooth is everywhere and it is expanding to many products. You will see it on some product you use, soon, since it is everywhere.

He is doing more than just pointing out that BlueTooth is out there, he has stated a time frame for an anouncement for a new or revised product that will incorperate Bluetooth. He also states that it is to come from a "major makers of something important in your life", and this at an OS X conference. In this context I doubt it is something coming from Palm, HandSpring, Sony, or Microsoft. It definatly sounds like it is refering to hardware, becouse Apple already has Bluetooth software as well as an adapter for current computers. iSync has just been released in Beta, so that is out there as well. It could be refering to BlueTooth in PowerBooks, or it could be a new iDevice...

Is it really that hard? It IS going to be the next PowerBook, rumoured all around the world. Would David Pogue make such a comment for Tungsten/T? Nope. Would he for SOME Nokia phone? Nope. Bluetooth printers are out in the market. It's the PowerBook.

this was really weird, the quote above is pretty much word for word as i remember it. i got the impression he was talking about apple. i don't know if that is wishful thinking or a vibe, but i just sensed he was speaking of our mac world. the only strange thing, is i am pretty sure he said 'across the board' as far as products go. so maybe he is talking about the palm.

    who knows...

That i can recall off hand:

    Mac OS X beta

    Bluetooth Software beta

    Previous versions of quicktime

Didn't they release a beta of Appleworks for X ?

Correct me if im wrong about any of these but i am positive that beta releases to the public isnt a new thing for apple.

Yeah.. Mac OS X had a Public Beta, several QuickTime Public Betas, and there was the Bluetooth "Technology Preview." Appleworks was just betaware on OS X for the longest time.

It's not new, no. But does it mean Apple's waiting to test it with new Bluetooth-enabled hardware? Possibly. Could it just be a massively complicated app filled with bodges and incomplete support? Possibly. (Heh, definitely..) It certainly doesn't hurt the prospect of a Bluetooth device or hardware integration.

Why haven´t they ever released a technical preview of any of their hardware? Do you think they will do it with the next powerbook <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

because its much easyer to update software that you sell to the final release then it would to update beta hardware...

the closest thing to a beta in hardware we have seen is the Xserve RAID (and insert any "road apple" here)

    Um, they do.

If you were Adobe you'd see some. Now... they might not have the same case as the shipping version, but Apple has historically allowed their major developers (or anyone they think necessary) access to 'future hardware'. Since Steve got back, the cases have been substantially more secret... But you still hear of people with access to prototype boards if only for a couple of days etc.

I don't think you'd see 'previews' of something as radical as the iPod.

It's not in Apple's best interests to make David Pogue PNG. I seriously doubt Steve Jobs decided to shun ATI when they leaked the Radeon info before one of the expos. I also doubt Jobs made TIME Magazine pay for for jumping the gun on the iMac announcement.

Has Apple run ads in Time since then?

No its true that Apple have released beta software before but with OS X Public beta they needed it out there for developers and for people to get used to it.

With Quicktime 6, they had already finished it and wanted it out there badly but hadn't ironed out the licencing.

I'm not sure about Appleworks for X, but didn't that appear at that desperate time when there were few applications making their way to X?

So my question is, why now for iSync? It has been suggested that its simply because they said they would release it by this time and maybe they didn't have it quite ready but felt they had to release something. And it has been suggested that they were just trying to squeeze another feature into .mac as they are under subscribed (plausible).

It could be either or both of these reasons. Do any other laptop manufacturers have BT on board? I read recently that Sony had gotten the worlds first DVD-R in a laptop (I guess Apple would have liked that first) so is it possible they are shooting for a BT first? The Powerbook is looked on by some as the most advanced laptop in the world and I guess its an edge Apple would like to hold on to.

Just wild speculation. If you discount the .mac theory (and I'm not saying you should) as to why iSync has been released then it stands to reason they are releasing it for some other reason.

That's right. iSync is in beta release because they want users to test it to have the bugs fixed rapidly. Why? Because their is a digital device comming soon and with iSync it will be a huge success.

What they need before christmas are:

    - price drop on iMac and eMac

    - new iDevice

it's a good timing for the switch ads.

That's because I think there could be an iDevice before Christmas. They can't do the switch ads for a long periode.

Bluetooth is everywhere? I must be somewhere other than everywhere, perhaps nowhere.

But seriously, bluetooth gadgets are getting a lot of hype. As of yet, however, there have been few products that have actually made an impact with the technology. It still falls into the gadget-geek category at this point, fun, but not a boon for productivity or functionality. This same discussion has been going on for many years now.

Someday, the bluetooth hype might come true but that doesn't mean these pundits know squat. If you claim that da Bears are going to win the superbowl, someday you'll be right.

I'm all for wireless technologies like bluetooth. However, it remains to be seen whether this standard will be adopted prior to it getting leapfrogged by something drastically superior.
