Apple Tablet Set For 2003?
In a speculative column at eWeek, Matthew Rothenberg suggests an Apple Tablet is coming sooner rather then later. Go here:

Powerbook is too big and heavy to be marked as a tablet. I think that a 12" display is the largest that you would want to go with one of these. I may be wrong, but I dont feel that the technology is quite ready for these yet. Yes you can make them, but battery life, power, and good quality "tablet" screens are just too much for what most people will view as a secondary, or even tertiary computer, and for effective text entry you will still need a keyboard, something that they are adding to PDA's now.
This is a bad idea from the beginning. Small, small niches here, nothing more. This is going to change the world.

Because Microsoft is trying to "innovate" in this new world, this smart alarm clock will throw a "GPF" and wake me because its snowing in Denmark when I happen to live in Atlanta, GA USA.

Perhaps, I'm not reading it well enough, but this seems like less than inside knowledge and more wishful column writing.
Synopsis: It'd be swell if Apple made a tablet too.
Now that <a href="http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1027-8-20636466-1.html?tag=sd"; target="_blank">everyone</a> and their Mum is rushing to make some awfully designed bricks^H^H^H tablets, Apple needs to create a design that rises above all of them (iPod-like: better, simpler, but slightly more expensive and yet people would still want it).

The Majority of Mac users that I know work in design. That alone says to me that it would not go unappreciated by a major group of users - not to mention students flipping it over to take notes.
There is also a new app from the makers of Maya <a href="http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/products/sketchbook/info.shtml"; target="_blank">Alias|Wavefront called Sketchbook Pro</a> that is already available for Tablet PC.
If Apple comes out with a Tablet/iBook, or Laptop I would be ecstatic, and would most likely buy one as soon as I could, but nobody but SJ, and a select few people know what Apple has in store for us in the near future.
BTW, don't bother looking up the Vadem Clio. I just did, and that thing looks so old, and outdated know it's not even funny. But at the time the design was freaking cool!

<strong>I used to biach, and moan in here that Apple should by the design rights to the Vadem Clio flip top style tablet. I still think a laptop that can double as a tablet is a win win situation for Apple, and it's customers. With good handwriting recognition most laptop users may find them self's using the tablet feature more than one might expect. Even if they didn't decide ever to use it they loose nothing. They still have their trusty laptop right there.

Designers would want a "wacom" tablet, which would be cost prohibitive, and students would need a sub $1000 price tag to be effectively marketed. History may prove me wrong, but I dont think the tablets time has come yet.

<strong>What if Apple were to take the design of the G4 iMac and make the screen detachable, with a wireless connection? It wouldn't create a totally portable device, but it would make it possible to come up with a true tablet, i.e., something that is light yet durable enough to take a lot of penwork on its face, with all of the applications and files on the iMac base eliminating the need for much electronics built into the tablet. In a way, it's taking the PDA and blowing it up into a full-sized screen. And when you want to use the tablet with a keyboard, just connect back to the iMac base.

So it wuld still be like a laptop, and you chuld have this realy coll dockingstation vhere it wuld becom a flat pannel display!!!! Just add a keybard an a mice and you wuld have the perfect pc/labtopp/tablet pc :cool: :cool: :cool:
How many of you can write faster than you can type?
And if word processing and email are by far the largest uses for computers, both of which involve lots of typing, why the hell would anyone want to carry around a pen-based screen with shite handwriting recognition. i've used inkwell and as far as i can tell, it's just as bad as the newton.
With the exception of some scientific applications, students who may want to draw diagrams from class notes, how is a tablet PC a good option for the avergae consumer? Don't answer. It's ok. I just don't get it and likely won't until I see it making life easier...
