Macs are destined to be expensive. We've got a wonderful design, clean cabling work, kick ass software, and a phenomenal G5 architecture. The more expensive it is, the better. Less people will be able to afford it thus making it more "special". If you want cheap, get an eMac or iBook! Graphic and audio pros need power, and the G5 gives that.
I personally wanted a show-down between a specially modded dual AMD Barton 3000XP (guide at Toms Hardware) with Gig of RAM costing, under $2,500 with that spanking new $3,000 Mac. Just a suggestion.
The low end model reminds me of the yikes... I may be wrong, but that's what comes to mind when i read the specs.
Not really. Yikes was a G3 mobo with a G4 processor. This is a new processor and new motherboard. Now if they managed to hack a 970 into a MDD motherboard, that would be a Yikes redux.
It looks great, but what about the 9 fans? Here I sit with a G3 500 with no fan. Why would a computer need 9 fans? What does this say about the processor? Is this an issue, or am just worrying too much?
Is this just a temporary issue until they further refine the G5? (I remember the computer staff at work installing an early Pentium server many years ago and saying that it would have to be in a separate cooled room! I don't know if this was ever really true, but I think that temperature issues were addressed.)
Regardless, my hats off to Apple for what looks to be a great new machine, fans notwithstanding.
Because the PCI controller (looks like this one that IBM used to make but now Tundra does) has 2 PCI busses. One is for the 2 133MHz slots and the other bus is split between one slot and the perpheral controller. Look at the G5 PDF on apples site and see page 9. All will become clear.
And watch it run at the same speed. 64-bit does not mean faster.
But gobbling up 64 bit instructions instead of 32 bit COULD help sustain enough processing throughput to make VPC run faster, process more data (64 bit) faster (G5).

Think I'll go sell some lemonade.
The keyboard and mouse don't match. Something is up! I bet we see new LCDs soon too.
He said "right-click" a LOT in the demos. Hmmmm.
Where is the El Capitan door?
I was surprised to not see a slot-loading optical bay.
I think the video cards are a little weak. I wanna play Doom3 on my G5, Steve.
Steve said "Kick-ass" every 2 minutes. I love it! Go Steve! He cracked me up!
Is SGI gonna go belly up?
Bye bye iSub and Soundsticks. Time to buy a 5.1 system!

Whew. With a 23" display, fully-loaded RAM, max capacity hard drive, wireless capabilities and speakers, the new G5 costs $10,065 (plus tax).

Almost as much as a IIvx (or something like that)
Imagine if Virtual PC becomes a 64 bit app.
Now imagine Panther combined with a G5 box.
Now put them togather.
Picture Steve in a bake-off, actually running Windows XP faster than a Dell with an Intel chip and Windows OEM!
:0)
Muhahahahahahahah

Hmm? somehow my VPC has been running at the same speed for years no matter how fast my Mac has become

I personally think the G5 is cool looking. And I bet in person, it cooler still.
Metal, and cold, clean lines....
...mmmm...
mac porn
AKA. new pics from the floor of the WWDC
I've been liking the design until that picture.

That would make for some cool light customizations.

Nope; it's the AMD 8131: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/cont...docs/24637.pdf
Come on my little kittens, life isn't perfect, but these pigs rock beyond our wildest dreams!
I for one and completely blown away by the G5.
I produce music for a living and this changes everything!
