If you don't need to use PCI-X slots (and let's face it, who does?) just get the 1.6 model.

If you want to get the fastest machine around, no compromises, get the dual 2 Ghz. Unless you need PCI-X and 8GB RAM, I can't think of any reason why you'd spring for the 1.8 Ghz. And if you need that stuff, you're much better served by shelling out the money for the dual 2Ghz.

1.6 or dual 2 Ghz. Forget the 1.8, it's an overpriced compromise.

yeah, the 1.8 seems like a bad deal for the money. overpriced.

while the dual 2Ghz seems like it's relatively underpriced.

oh well, guess that just means everyone bumps themselves up a notch or two for their machine speed.

Well, I have one thing to say to those of you who can afford a G5, be it 1.6, 1.8 or dual 2. Damn You!!! You can go to H3LL and Die!!!

Seriously, If I had the capital for a G5 I'd get the dual 2 or wait for the revision if I had a computer that would accomplish what I needed until then. Plus, no doubt the G5 rocks, but it may take a revision or two to work out any bugs.

well it IS the only way to get 8 gigs of ram fed to one processor (and how that could be an advantage is beyond me, but I'm sure there is a situation where 8 gigs on one proc will be better then 8 shared between 2... )

but like I said... it is beyond me.... looks cool tho...

Be careful, the 1.6 and 1.8 have some limitations that I've not seen anyone talk about yet. You're getting more than a processor for you money on the Dual G5.

    Check out this link:

    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/index.html

Click the text "Power Mac G5 (Preliminary) (PDF)", and read this doc.

The PCI slots run at 33MHz not 133 and 100MHz. Next the is a picture (illustration really) showing the motherboards of the dual and single processor systems. There are only 4 RAM slots for the single processors systems. The last item I found interesting is that if run any other operating system other than the Mac OS, the heat sensors don't work, and you have to write your own code to control them!

Some food for thought on which system to buy!

The Dualie is looking to be the best value right now considering the fore mentioned items.

I see the schematic for the Dual Proc boards on page 22. Where is the single?

Powermac G5 Tech Specs say 1.8Ghz has same PCI-X Bus

Memory slots should be 8(8GB max currently) in the 1.8Ghz as well. I don't know where you are seeing otherwise.

the 1.8GHz machine is simply a DP mobo with one of the processor slots empty. This brings up an interesting thought though. What if you could get a pull from a defunct machine in the future and upgrade your 1.8SP to a 1.8DP? All you would need is the processor module, heatsink and the appropriate fan in the processor fan chassis. It shouldn't throw off the cooling circuitry either.

Get the 1.8 GHz. It has the same amount of default RAM, same HD size, same RAM speed...it's basically identical to the Dual 2.0, but no duals and a slightly worse GPU. Get the 1.8., and you will have extra money for a display/RAM.

i'd say get the dualie unless you can't afford it then wait till you can or for the next revision because the dualie is the only that offers a long life...especially for the price

Despite all the posts I'm still not seeing the reason that the 1.8 is be favored over the 1.6 by such a wide margin.

    Differences:

    900MHz FSB vs 800

    512M vs 256M RAM (8 slots vs 4)

    160G vs 80G drive

    PCI-X slots

Agreed that the Dual 2G is the sweet spot, but if it's out of reach why not save $400 and get a 1.6? PCI-X slots are not a factor for most, RAM is maybe $70. Drop another drive in later.

Biggest limiting factor I see is the 4 memory slots

The difference between the 1.6 and the 1.8 is all about the mobo. When dealing with Apple, ALWAYS buy the latest mobo tech, since that's the one piece you cannot upgrade. The proc upgrades will come, more PCI-X devices will come, etc. The 1.6 is a non-starter.

go for the biggest and best you can buy...the extras liek bigger HD more RAM, better display can come later in the next 5yrs or so...once you get a computer ur stuck with it (unless ur rich or trade ur computer for the next latest and greatest). I go for the best i can afford at the time because u can upgrade other stuff later, but unless you have the newer technologies you won't be able t upgrade to higher amounts of ram, or video card

if you would keep upgrading ur 1.6 compared to dualie, the 1.6 would be more cramp for speed because of its bus and processor

I don't know...I think the dual 2 GHz G5 is the best deal of all of the G5 models from both a price, features, and performance standpoint. I never buy top of the line anything because I'm usually carping about how quickly it goes out of date or gets less expensive over time. However, I will be the 1st to chime in and say that I think you can't beat the Dual 2GHz for what you get. It's a tough decision. I'm going to wait a little while though. Perhaps you could wait too and see how the playing field settles out before diving into buying one.

    Well I can't wait,I've sold my G4 and I have Mac Withdrawal!

By reading the posts it seems the majority feels the dual 2gig is worth the $700 stretch.

I'm not going to preorder though, when I can walk into an Apple Retail Store and play with them is when I'll buy one.
