9 days from MWSF and what do we really know? NADA!
i've been a mac user for a long time and let's face it...trying to find out what's going to be released at macworld is oftentimes more fun and more exciting than the announcement itself.
this show, in particular, has been marked with an incredible silence. we're 10 days away and nobody knows anything for certain. cellphone PDA? lifestyle device? new powermacs? 19''imac? it's all up in the air. is apple holding a few well-hidden aces or are we all getting excited over nothing?

The optimistic view would be that people are taking their NDA seriously and great and exciting new announcements will astound the public. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
Apple needs to do this across the line and then use screen size and drive to set up price points.
Additionally the price needs to drop some more.
They need to announce $2-300 price drops on the PowerMac line.
They need to have updates to iMovie and Appleworks available.
All these things need to be available immediately instead of March.

The main reason that there is some buzz before a MacWorld is that there usually really are some new products coming.
What if there are NO new products from Apple at this MacWorld?
Keynote:
- Mac OS X
- Apple Store Retail
- Sony Ericsson demo
- iSync final version (not really new)
- iChat 1.1 (not really new)
- Quark demo (shipping at the end of 2003)
- Microsoft demo (MSN)
- Steve hints at good things to come in 2003
They could upgrade the iMac quietly to 933&800Mhz without mentioning it in the keynote.

<strong>...the iMac and the eMac better get an update that features 133 mhz fsb, 1 meg backside cache, processor of at least 1 ghz and graphics of gf4mx or else Apple might as well hit the locker room now.

STFU.
Looks like we're going to have another unhappy camper post-keynote on the 7th. Apple needs this, apple needs that, or theyre going to go out of business.
Just like all the other times they didn't live up to the expectations of assholes like you. Yep they're out of business alright. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
Apple isn't going anywhere. MWSF will be a good show, don't get your hopes up for anything huge, but also don't be such a sorry waste of life. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

What's so wrong about his expectations? The iMacs should've had a 133MHz bus, at least a GeForce 4mx and a 1GHz G4 at least 6 months ago. I don't agree with him about Apple being out of business, but the specs on the iMac should've been like that a long time ago.

If Apple doesn't update the [Insert product here] and at least add[feature here], increase the speed to [mhz # here] and price it at least [price reduction here] lower then it is, then Apple is dead in the water.
<strong>I just hope Apple doesn't start up with that 'Countdown to MWSF' again. That really got people disappointed last year.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Yeah, Fran, that made the expo really suck last year. With all that hype there really should've been something more amazing than the iMac.
So really there's no way to be sure what the silence means. Other than silence.
Not that there is anything wrong with Apple being hard on leaks, they need to be able to keep secrets.
In previous Macworld Expos, we had, leading up to them, all the talk of a new G4 PowerBook, the G4 Cube, new flat panel iMacs and WAY back in the summer of 1999 talk of new "consumer laptops, based on the iMac...".
This time?
[crickets chirping...squeak...squeak...]
Very odd.
Probably means one of two things: the absolute WORST, most boring and waste-of-space Macworld Expo EVER.
Or...quite the opposite.
My take?
Some iApp updates, a new iDevice and accompanying iApp, substantial iMac (possible eMac?) updates/revs and for the "oh yeah, one more thing...": a high-end G4 iBook.
NOT replacing the two low-end affordable models, of course. But as a $1600-1800, "okay, you've been screaming for one...if you want one, here it is..." special edition type of thing. Just so Jobs can finally say "every line we ship now has a G4 in it somewhere.
Not to mention they'll sell like lap dances at a political convention.
People will still buy the G3-based $999 and the model right above it (education customers, home users, budget-conscious users, etc.), but anyone thinking of spending $1600-1800 on a "consumer level" laptop wouldn't mind so much if it had a G4 in it and perhaps some sort of other cool feature that sets it apart?
Just going out on a limb...
(see thread in Future Hardware for my reasoning, and a bit more detailed take on why it's not ENTIRELY out of the realm of possibility).

Strange, I thought the imac was a rather impressive piece of consumer equipment.
It's too bad that that Apple doesn't have any good CPU's to use. It would be interesting to see what they could come up with for the mid to pro-users. Maybe we'll find out next year. Patience is a virtue.

Well design-wise it was "way beyond the rumor sites" and it was really impressive looking, but nothing else about it and nothing else released at MWSF 02 was that great.
Genreally what you do find out by signing an NDA isn't much. You might get code and product type, price and part code. No release dates or shipping dates.
Just to let you guys know there hasn't been any NDAs of yet and probally won't be before San Fran, usualy means therers going to be some big announcments.
<strong>I regually sign NDAs for Apple and it really isn't worth saying anything that you know.

Hmm.. I'm getting kind of excited.
<strong>I think if I was under a NDA with Apple regarding any upcoming products, I would watch Apple fileing civil and criminal charges agasint the recent source and think twice about saying anything.

People are loyal to Apple, and most people that get insider knowledge don't reveal it, and make sure they don't reveal anything indirectly either. If you are lucky enough to recieve insider knowledge, good for you! But you can't expect others to spill the beans.
The cult giveth with one hand, and with the other taketh away.
