WireTap is a free product for MacOS X 10.2 or later that allows you to record any audio playing on your Mac, saving it to a file for later listening or processing. This allows you to record news from Internet radio stations such as the BBC News, sound snippets from your favorite DVD movie, record the audio from a game, or even iChatAV conversations.



WireTap works using a simple tape recorder-like interface. Simply click the record button, and any audio playing through your Mac will be recorded to disk. WireTap can record any sound that is playing regardless of the source, so RealPlayer, iTunes, DVD Player, Windows Media Player, etc. are all supported.

    Indeed. I'm still waiting for a iTunes 4.0.1 patch which allows sharing and downloading. This is cool though, especially for freeware. Hey moki thanks! It's like Audio HiJack, for free.

    It's different. Better and worse, depending on how you use it. It's better in that you can launch and record at any time and don't have to "hook" the apps in. It's worse in that it records EVERYTHING the sound system makes and isn't limited to a specific app.

    It's on my computer actually; pretty close to being done too, we're just weighing whether we want to redo the rather dated looking graphics or not...

    Yep, that's about right. There's also the "free" thing too.

    Wiretap is great for free! Congratulations Ambrosia.



    You know, oddly, I was saying two days ago to a friend, as we were moaning about the state of Mac Gaming (I don't like the new fangled "Quake Engine" blah blah 3D gear, I'm old school), how I really wished that the old Ambrosia games were available for OS X. I so loved Apeiron and Swoop and Barrack!

    Yeah great app moki (and great to be able to communicate with the "highest up" of a software maker about their products )



    One question: With all thoise codexes why isn´t there MP3 recording on it? License reasons? Resources?

    i'm off to download it to try and see how good the quality you can get

    Quality? It's 100% quality if you choose a lossless file format. What the system plays is exactly what WireTap records.

    I made a mistake when packaging up WireTap 1.0.0, which renders the "Timed Recording" AppleScript for WireTap useless. Fixing it is easy, though.



    1) click on the Timed recording AppleScript in the Finder

    2) choose "Get Info..." from the File menu

    3) click on the disclosure triangle for "Name & Extension"

    4) change the extension on the file from ".applescript" to ".scpt"

    5) there is no step 5



    It should work fine after doing that. Sorry about that one...

    I understand the problems with MP3 and AAC ($$) but wonder if Ogg Vorbis and FLAC might be added at a future date?



    What ever the answer, you've given us a "Grab" for sound. Thank you!

    Probably not; perhaps in a "pro" version if we decide to to it, though.
