New iPod Hints

Fist, I would like to establish that what I am about to tell you is something I heard from a friend who heard from an employee at Apple. But I trust him and I know he has lots of connections and he doesn't even know mac rumor sites even exist so I don't think he would lie.

Anyway, my friend said that the new top of the line iPod would have a lot of new "applications." His friend wouldn't say what the "applications" were but was very clear that it was only the top of the line iPod that would be affected.

I know this isn't much but atleast it can help narrow other people's speculation. I don't know if applications means new software or if it will have video capabilities like others have speculated on this board but maybe this clue can help people piece together what is coming. It makes sens that only thee top of the line pod would change nas Apple is still selling the normal pods very well and I'm sure they want to drop the price which is a lot easier without adding new features.

Again, I could be wrong but I bet I'm not.

Movies on an iPod? I mean, just movies?

BTW: Happy New Year, one and all. It is now Twenty Oh Three.

Wouldn't it be fun to sit in on meetings with Steve and the engineers at Apple? "Hmmm, what can we do with the iPod to improve it?"

I can't think think of any other applications to add to the iPod, execpt to PDA-ize it. I don't think its a good idea to make the iPod more PDA-ish. Specialized products let people choose what they want, instead of having to pay for things they will never use. Personally, I don't think an Apple PDA is right. Most PDA's on the market are on target. Maybe Apple licencing Newton software out to other PDA vendors? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Who is going to pay $600+ for an iPod that can play movies on a 1.5" LCD? The idea of such a thing, a videoPod has been dumb since the beginning, while a color screen might be nice, I can't believe someone mocked up the idea. Oh, dear.

    Amen!

A 1.5" colour screen is simply gimmicky and not practical. Just keep the iPod the way it is with a few tweaks (perhaps FM tuner or recording capabilities at the most) and simply lower it's price. By doing this, it'll continue to sell well and remain as the best MP3 player performance and value wise.

No, but having a video out like the Archos has would make it worthwhile and the small lcd would just be utilitarian.

    and putting the port... where?

    video screen...pointless.

microphone...could be useful, but it would make the pod bigger.

radio...could probably do with near the same.

    phone...no

    writing capability...no

    Things the iPod is:

    Portable music player.

    Large portable firewire drive.

    contact organizer.

    calender.

    don't make it a expensive-as-hell-doohicky-with-color-screen-and- bluetooth-connecting-to-your-tv-to-download-tv-while- you-stream-music-to-your-wireless-headphones-while- watching-braveheart-on-the-1.5-inch-1600x1200-color-screen.

    It aint gonna happen.

I've posted this before, and I'll post it again: The video out would be the same sort seen on the Dual-USB early 2002 iBooks, where it plugs into the headphone socket. Apple has both the technology and the cabling already made up for this.

What about iPod + iPhoto? Isn't this obvious to everyone?

What about a (even slightly) bigger screen?

I find interesting how many people "know" what iPod "is". iPod is whatever Apple wants it to be.

I (personally) noticed that Apple did NOT call it "iPlayer" or "iMusic" or some such.

The idea of a screen on it is stupid. Nuff said.

But, the idea of video out for sharing your iPhotos and your iMovies and iDVDs on any TV you carry your iPod over to is a great idea!

Don't expect it to be something where you can encode or download DVD movies onto it and watch them, the MPAA would never let that happen, especially with all of Apple's ties to it, but for one's own iMovies and digital photo collection slideshows and whatnot, it's a definite possibility.

The iPod it a 'pod' to store music, files, calendar, contacts, photos, movies.. it just needs an svideo out or one of the iBook-like TV-out adapters, and a little bit of software and a graphics chip inside, perhaps, and it could do so much more with the storage it holds, you know?

IF they can extend the iPod to become a 'digital wallet'. Great.

'iBusiness cards' in colour. iCal, Address book etc, iPhoto stuff of families, places...view photos on TV...watch Quicktime trailers...even a Keynote speech... (Hey, the streaming size I get aint anybigger than an iPod screen )

I think a colour 'iPod' or 'vPod' model would certainly bring alot of apple's Digital hub stuff together.

    Why not?

It may be the top of the line or adjacent model a 'vPod.'

Maintaining their lead in 'iPod' players by driving down prices would be a good idea. So I wouldn't like to see them replace the 'black and white' models. Just drive the low-end model down further. There's still room to get prices cheaper to get others to buy iPod. If they can get an iPod down to the old £99 inc Vat walkman prices then I'm buying already.

They ought to try and OWN the 'player' market.

Edit: and another thing. Why the HELL shouldn't we see those iTune visualisations on an i/vPod? In colour! Duh! That would be wayyyyy cool in long train journeys. Again, part of the 'hub' going on an iWalk. Add rendevous and sharing vPod music and visualisations at yer mate's parties...! Pretty psychedelic patterns in the dark...great for insomniacs...wooooooo....

I don't think it should have a built in mic, rather a Audio In port, to allow for options. Or maybe if it's small enough they could also squeeze in a mic. It doesn't take that much space. As a college student I would like an iPod that could record. I'd buy one.

Watching video on the screen, pointless. Color screen, maybe, on the high end one. If you make it, someone will pay for it... I agree, keep the iPod simple.

But Pilmour Boy made an excellent point, using the 1/8" plug for video and audio like Dual USB iBooks do!!! My iBook's cable even matches That would be REALLY COOL to play vids off an iPod. WICKED COOL! (yea northeastern slang!)

FM tuner, yes please. There again, how much space would this take?

With a mic and/or Audio In and FM tuner alone it'd be a GREAT upgrade.

Then there's always the surprise feature Apple comes out with that we didn't even know we needed until we get it!

...and the time they spent on it, i would have never guessed its a screen shot of quicktime cropped into the screen of the iPod

althoug that person wasn't going for reality, they could have at least just done the movie, having that QT bar down there is pointless, specially the timer, its almost impossible to read now, let alone if that were actual size

i'm bored so this is the best post i could some up with

but come on, are you telling me if you could get a color screen and play movies on it for $50 you wouldn't? (heh, though apple would charge 100 extra)

Yeah I would. Just like I would if could get a PowerBook for under $2000. But that won't happen soon.

And actually I would guess apple would probably ask closer to $200 more for any colour screen.

Who says video capability has to be added to the existing ipod? Why not a NEW "_Pod" device strictly for video/photos.

Pointless, it's easy to add to the iPod and jibes with its function. It's a Walkman of the 21st century: a multimedia Walkman. However adding a good screen will wait a few years for newer/cheaper display tech, plus its current screen smokes everything else already.
