WTF is with this mini craze? If you're into hot hatches, the revived GTi is what you want. The Mini. . . bleh. Get behind the wheel of a car that actually has some serious speed, and you get jaded quickly. The mini is not anything to be impressed about speed or handling wise.
If you're into fast cars that are less than 35,000. . . . . . . . 2006 Rx-7!
And it comes out just in time for me to have plenty of cash to buy one.

Curb weight:
Cooper S - 2673 pounds
GTI VR6 - 3036 pounds
0-60 MPH:
Cooper S - 6.9 seconds
GTI VR6 - 7.7 seconds
Fuel efficiency:
Cooper S - 24 City, 33 Highway
GTI VR6 - 23 City, 30 Highway
Top speed:
Cooper S - 136 MPH
GTI VR6 - 139 MPH
Big whoop. Do I need to go on? Let's see, as there are speed limits that I try to stay within 10 MPH of 99% of the time, top speed means nothing. Handling and acceleration on the other hand are more important. Fuel efficiency too. Style too. The GTI is a box. The basic design dates back to the late 90s. The Cooper S dominates in the autocross events the SCCA sets up here. I wasn't allowed to push the Mini when I test drove it, but I have seen what other people have done driving theirs on surface streets. I've NEVER seen any other production car dart around like that.
Oh yeah...those numbers don't even include the available "S-Works" option, which results in a Cooper S that pulls like a #%@#. 200+ BHP in a 2600 pound car...
From the press, and some pretty reliable first hand accounts, it seems that the new mini may be the best handling FWD car ever built. I hope we can get a WRC (AWD, 2L turbo version) just for shits and giggles sometime soon.
Hmm. I'm pretty sure the last Gti ran a 7.2 0-60, and I figured th new one would be better. I suppose that I am wrong. I've seen some mini's in action, though, and while they're pretty quick, they weren't *that* impressive. They didn't corner nearly as well as a more purpose built sports car would have. Sometimes I wonder how it would fair against some of the new rally-style cars on the market, which are a bit more usable that my trusty Rx-7.
I also think the mini is dreadfully ugly too. but that's subjective. Of course, getting an impreza or an Evo doesn't give you much credit in the sense of style points either.
If I had the money, I would have a Mini in a second. I LOVE that car.
But then again, it gives me bad memories... came --> <-- this close to going to Spain last year for their big Mini Mystery game. Blasting around in a Mini S catching bad guys... *sigh*
I get a hard-on every time I see one of these babies.
Whaa?? Holy Cripes man. The Mini is nearly *perfect* in my eyes. What would you consider 'perfect'? (Be warned...if you start to blather on about 'something black & gold with a big friggin pheonix on the hood...I WILL slap you silly).

Perfect in my eye's is a Mazda 787B. Unfortunately, that's not streetable, but everyone should want a "Charge" spoiler. . . That really makes it. Listed below is what came to mind when I though "near perfect cars". There are others that really catch my eye too: a number of the new Audi models, for example, the new Infiniti g35 looks really nice. . . etc.
That's about the best looking mini I've seen, but still when I see it the first word that comes to mind is "choad." (It's also a pretty fast mini, as mini's come)
Here are some classics of good taste and high income:
The rims on that Cooper S are the gaudiest things ever.
I would say not really. They very much blend in with the style of the front grille and trim. 5 spoke rims or other more traditional rims would look out of place.
They could be better, but they're not so terrible, shades of 80's rally car glory there, make me think of old Lancia spider web type rims. There are better examples/evolutions of the theme though. What we really need is a WRC spec mini, perhaps an F2 spec car, then folowed by a full blown WRC spec racer. Mini's rock. Covertable next year, probably followed by a wagon in 2005/6. They've taken the trouble of building a dealer network, and while that could easily be folded back into BMW, it doesn't seem that wise. More models will be needed, and newer updates/revisions, as time passes. While the basic shape should not change too much, I'd love to see a wagon with 4 proper seats, the convertible (coming, though I wouldn't buy it) and some BTO spec racers, S-works, should only be the tip of the iceberg. I want to see F2 and WRC minis!
How can two branch offices at the ends of the earth in a country with a population of only 20 million with miniscule budgets for new car development make the best large family affordable rear wheel drive cars on the planet?
Oh yeah, because we're Australian!
PS. Have you ever seen such cool looking Police cars (Ford USA take note)?

Okay-- mildly kidding.
Q: How do you pronounce "DaimlerChrysler"?
A: "Daimler". The Chrysler is silent.
I think it's the other way around. There's little "Daimler" to be found in the "Chrysler".
Man, they have really upped the HP feel. It really goes FAST!
If God wasn't dead, he would drive a Mini.

Yes. Anyone who's necklace is 4X bigger than the hood ornament of the cars he's selling can definitely have my money.

I'm somewhat partial here also, because the inner beauty of the 787B counts for something. 4 - count 'em - 4 rotors and 12 sparkplugs.
Here are some pics.

Not super expensive cars
The Elise. . . basically all variants look great, it's small, british, and it can slaughter a mini on a road course. Here one of the variants.

Yeah, and the engine in it and the SRT-4 makes about 250 HP stock AT THE WHEELS.
I check up on it all the time.
They are great cars.
The VW and Minis some people are fawning over are ugly.
Made by Holden (GM), whose expertise in rear wheel drive engineering is considered the best in the GM group;

You'll probably never see that beauty in the USA, but you will see this one;

GM USA imports than from Aus., adds a different front end and calls it the Pontiac GTO.
Now for Ford Australia...
What a masterpiece this is. 240KW, 450NM at 2000 RPM...
