Super Bowl 2003/1984

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
You know, the hardware announcments were delayed until late january instead of happening at MacWorld. The Super Bowl is in late January that has a larger audience than MacWorld.

Is it possible that Apple may run a long 1984-ish ad during the Super Bowl? Only this time, Microsoft, not IBM, would be the bad guy. That would be an interesting way to announce new hardware and make sure people are listening.

I doubt that it will happen. But a nice dream would be for next year to have a 1984ish like commercial...being that it will have ben twenty years...something like:

"We are reintroducing Macintosh and you will see why 2004 won't be like 1984..." fades to chaos for a few seconds then the soundtrack gets mute...slow motion effect is put in...the camera pans to a corner with someone doing some abscure instruction set and everything is so fast it is flying by him on the screen...pans a little to the left and you see that it is a PowerMac 970

EDIT: Twenty not ten DOH! I need more sleep or coffee <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

I think it would be wonderful if Apple did a Superbowl commercial of any sort, it's a great way to spend money on advertising.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE 1984 COMMERCIAL IS CONSIDERED THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE AD EVER?

Things are sort of falling into place for an Apple 2003/1984 type commercial. M$ will be the bad Orwellian figure and Apple will save the day. I think Apple is just that sort of company, one that would go back to its ad roots and basically remake their old success through it.

Go to the following thread for a list of advertisers that I posted yesterday. As of early this week, no Apple:

    Guys, come on...

Apple has an amazing operating system now, incredible, useful FREE iApps that work wonderfully, the most gorgeous, sexy hardware any company could wish for, etc.

Of COURSE they're not going to run a Super Bowl ad. That goes against everything they seem to be striving for: total niche status and anonymity at all costs.

But seriously, I REALLY wish they'd unveil some kick-ass, jaw-dropping spot that just makes all the people watching go "Oh my gosh...screw Dell, I'm getting a Mac as soon as this game is over!"

They won't of course. But it's nice to dream. You gotta have dreams.

A Superbowl ad would be great. Of course Apple won't do it though.

Apple hasn't run a Superbowl ad for the past three, so why should they now when the PC business is in the dumps. However, there still are a few spots open, so.... maybe the Powerbook ad with Yao Ming. Doubt it though.

Pessimist, even if you are right you could show less pessimism.

I don't call it pessimism. Just being realistic and grounded. Apple HASN'T run a Super Bowl ad in quite a while. Combined with other silliness they often seem to be capable of, he's probably dead-on in his prediction that they won't again this year (even though, as I stated above, they've got all this wonderful stuff in place right now: hardware AND software).

We're allowed to ding our favorite fruit company when they annoy us with their stunning displays of complancency and media shyness.

That's why I want to work for Apple's marketing department someday...I want to change the public image that people have had inculcated upon them.

BECAUSE the PC business is in the dumps

I very seriously doubt it. I was also thinking it would probably be a waste of $$, but then again, this would be the first Super Bowl where 85% of the population is within driving distance of an actual Apple Store.

HEY! I watch the superbowl. I love football! There are plenty of mac heads who watch football and the superbowl just look in the outsider forum.

We aren't all geeks ya konw.

Besides, isn't the average, super-bowl watching joe the target of the switch campaign?

I too would like to see a kick-ass Apple ad during the super-bowl, but I don't think it will be a sequel to the 1984 ad. I would guess that only Mac-heads like us and people who are addicted to those "World's Greatest Commercials" type shows would remember or be aware of the '84 ad. Also, many computer buyers aren't even old enough to really remember the '84 ad. I was only two at the time for instance.

It also stands to reason that a super-bowl ad would be targeted to the consumer line-up so we could only hope for iMac and iBook revisions.

Despite the pessimistic ideas that preceed, I can't help but be hopeful for something that'll blow me, and Intel away!

Yes, with that whole "85% of the population within easy distance to an Apple Store" thing (which I hadn't even thought about), PLUS iLife coming out the day before, probably new iMacs and stuff, Jaguar hitting on all cylinders, etc., it would be really lame for Apple to not run a nice, new commercial. Especially considering the NUMBER OF PEOPLE WATCHING TV THAT DAY!!!

And, as opposed to a spot showing/highlighting a single thing, I was thinking more of an overall "lifestyle" type of ad, where pretty much everything Apple is shown or given face time:

Just a really cool-looking montage type of commercial with great camera work, showing digital video creation (you would have a quick title on screen that says, for instance, "digital video" and then show a couple of quick, staggered clips of a camera being plugged in to a FireWire Port and iMovie or Final Cut Express on screen, same with iTunes and music ("digital music"), show the logo/packaging for iLife, show the hardware, one after the other, in quick succession, starting with the iPod, the iBook, the eMac, the LCD iMac, the 17" PowerBook, the G4 tower and a Cinema Display (kind of a reverse zoom: going from smallest hardware to the largest).

Show AirPort. Show iSync. Show Mail and Safari.

You see those commercials on Nickelodeon or MTV where it's just BAM! BAM! BAM! quick-cuts and pulsing music and great visuals. You wouldn't need any voiceover or anything.

Then fade away to the words "Feel like stepping up?" or some other phrase along the lines of "you know you want to" or "there is an alternative" or something just really grabby and "look, dammit!"

Just 30 straight seconds of making this stuff look as cool and enticing as possible, all of it, and at the end, a chrome Apple logo and the Apple website.

If they did anything like that, I'd fall on the floor and cheer myself silly.

Instead, what they'll have is yet another "Switch" commercial, with another schlumpy-looking person babbling about how their scanner or whatever wouldn't work until they got a Mac.

Yes, let's foist more goofy-looking, stammering people on the viewing public, in the guise of a "Switch" ad.

Let's give all the people watching football (knowing what the vast majority of them are probably like: drunk, loudmouthed, a bit on the jock side of life, etc...not ALL - I watch it too - but a HUGE number) something to laugh at: "Jesus, look at that spaz!" or whatever.
