The other thing that is worth checking is whether you pstn line has call waiting ... i would have thought osx should be able to handle this but i don't know for certain same goes for 9. Maybe 9 supresses call waiting interupts and 10 doesn't?

I can't remember whether you said you had tried a number of pstn lines or just one... definately worth a go so you can discount a dirty line.

    Interesting.

Before DSL, I used dial-up with MacOS 9.0 through 9.2.2 and MacOS-X 10.1.5 through 10.2.4 - I never had a problem with either OS (Earthlink and AOL). I connected at 49 or 50 about 90% of the time.

Well the main thing which gets me mad about OS X dial up is that the OS X disconnects on it's own for nothing...where OS 9 could hold on to it's connection much better with the same hardware....i called my ISP and they even say there log says it's my Mac disconnecting not them kicking.

So what i did was put the modem script of the OS 9 one in the place of the OS X modems folder and it works better....but disconnects...but less...if you go to the apple forums you will see how many in the imac have said they get disconnected more in os x with there new hardware than they did with there older mac on the same line or pc....so it leeds to os x has having issues in this area.

But as everyone at Apple use's T1 for the net and broadband is get more popular each day...they forget that there is people that can't get broadband or can't afford it....so dial up in OS X won't get fixed.

I don't use PPP on any machine anymore, but I have to concur with the Royal Pain because I have had experience with OS X's past PPP shortcomings. It's pretty amazing that Apple can do so many wonderful things but can't manage to do PPP properly. The PPP kernel hang issue was still plaguing us all the way until 10.1.4 or so, and it's probably a similar story for PPP kernel panics on duals. Since I haven't used 10.2 PPP, I can't really comment, yet it's not surprising that things aren't too great. Perhaps it's Apple's not so gentle nudge to the broadbandless.

Amen. The only reason I even have internet access at home is because it is free.
