Three donugt holes are in the mail as a reward for lost bandwidth. And I´ll give myself one so nobody has to do the honour.

If someone posts exact specs, they should get, like, a whole thousand extra post counts or somethin, or get to change their member status like their sig, or, yeah...

Jesus people, this a speculation and rumor board. I for one like the discussions brought on by those. You want to turn this into a worship setting for the lucky sod that guesses right? Not me. I for one like AI for the debates and passion we all have. This whole 'reward' system reeks of MacNN forum people kissing the ground that 'seannypez' walks on. You guess right? Good for you. I'll buy you a beer.

[edit] ...and yes Bigc, your comment was pointless. Post an opinion at the very least. That's what this is all about, right?

    You're missing my point.

I have no problems with 'discussion', or 'educated guesses'.

And debating the pros and cons of posible upcoming hardware/software is useful.

What isn't useful is people claiming to have inside info (ie: a friend of a friend of a friend works at apple etc...) when they would probably get closer to the mark if they jerked off on a ouija board and took a semenal reading.

I for one would like some system that enables me to know how accurate members have been in the past with their predictions. If a reward system is unfeasible, then perhaps some ranking system (determined by the moderators)? (Insightful posts could also be rewarded)

    eg.

5 bombs through to 5 stars

I don't know how difficult that would be to implement, but it would be useful.

    No, you're missing my point.

What you propose isn't fun. It doesn't spur debate. It puts members into factions...those who 'believe' said poster and those who 'don't'. And then all hell breaks loose with the inevitable 'well, this 4 star poster said this so I'm on his side rather than being on the 1 star guys side and what the hell does this 2 bomb guy think he's saying because he's been wrong on MWThis and MWThat last year and we all know he's full of shit because...'

I for one don't want that. AI (IMO) is a pretty even-keeled board (with some attitudes of course, what would be the fun coming here if we didn't have that?), that I enjoy. No, really enjoy coming to every day. A system like this would destroy AI. For all the love/hate relationships here, we all really do, in some way or another, like each other (mostly . )

There are a number of problems with this idea.

First of all, given Apple's attitude toward leaks, we have no interest in instituting a system that has the effect of painting great big targets on people with actual inside information.

Second of all, nobody sane leaks detailed inside information about Apple onto a board anymore. You're too easy to trace. If you come across information and you absolutely have to blurt it out to someone in the sort of detail demanded in this thread, send it to any of the sites (not all rumors sites!) that have anonymous email addresses/phone numbers for just this sort of thing. Those sites can, and do, add a layer of security and anonymity that is simply not possible with an individual post to a message board. Ask seanyepez over in the MacNN Forums.

Lastly, Apple spends half a billion dollars a year on R&D. It is a simple fact that for every product that makes it all the way to the public there are dozens that make it to proof-of-concept, and maybe a bit farther past, before being shelved or reworked from scratch, or scotched altogether. Many projects are years in the making, and change direction multiple times. Additionally, some features can change incredibly quickly, or a defect can be discovered at the last minute that either changes or delays the project for an unknowable amount of time. Release dates, in particular, can be honored or pushed back - or pushed forward - more or less at whim, so they're almost impossible to guess. In summary, it's entirely possible for a genuine insider to post 100% accurate information about what he or she has seen, and nevertheless manage to whiff a number of details, or find that the product they described got delayed, or Steved, or (unbeknownst to them) was only manufactured in a small quantity for some reason known only to Apple. Work within Apple is carefully segregated, so engineers rarely have the full picture of what they're working on. Late in the game, marketing people might, but they don't know more than what shows up in the literature they're supposed to make pretty. Also, a project can be leaked years before completion, as Matt Rothenberg did when he showed Inkwell running in OS 9.

You can offer all the beer you can get your hands on, but I doubt it will do much to improve the quality of the insider information here. The risks are too high, and the variables are too many, to reliably tell genuine information from a clever fake.

This reminds me of another problem: Most apparent insiders are newly registered accounts with very few or no prior posts. There would be no way to give them stars until after the fact, and at that point they would have wisely abandoned the account and made themselves scarce.

In fact, let me be even more clear. In my 5 or so years lurking and posting on AI, I honestly haven't seen too many of the 'swoop-in swoop-out' people. Sure, there's been a few. And there's also been a few that have been here a while that people either believe, want to believe, or don't believe at all *cough*Dorsal*cough*Kormac*cough*. So what. It's interesting. It spurs debate and ridicule. It's FUN dammit. In your system Dorsal/Kormac/and recently aa would have negative points (or bombs). Bullshit I say. I look forward to their posts. Crap or not, it's up to the AI members to decide (for themselves of course). I (and hopefully We) like it that way.

I can appreciate your thought. Really. We all get frustrated by lack of info and dashed hopes. But sometimes the surprises are worth it. Aren't they?

Proof? And no, thinksecret is not proof. Everyone seems to think this is true, but how about this scenerio:

Apple has ALWAYS charged for iDVD. You could not download it for free ever. The only other way of getting it is by buying a Mac. I believe that iMovie 2 was the same way (I maybe be wrong on this one). So maybe Apple thought, "Hey, we are already making this DVD for iDVD, and only using 1.5 GBs of it. Lets throw on the other iApps so people can get them all at once, and so we can fill that exra space. It will be great for the dial up users. Plus we can make another cool looking box."</strong><hr></blockquote>

Uh no. Go take another look, the sources and the confirmation are a lot deeper than just thinksecret.

About the 12 and 17, reliable people were told of their impending debut, including one of our own. Of course a ton of other speculation was floating around, this is rumor which in practice includes wild fantasy and entertaining speculation, but we really weren't that far off afterall. And because Jobs has decided to hold onto his desktop updates untill next week, doesn't mean we don't know the general shape of those either, Mr Wood. What, are you working on a guerilla marketing campaign for Apple or something? The simple fact remains that it is ALWAYS wise to consult the web community before making any Apple related purchases. Realistic projections are fairly easy to pick out of the other fun stuff that goes on around here if you've got half a brain.

I'd be more worried about Jobs' unnatural fascination with rumor sites. He mentions them in keynotes, in pre-show publicity, villainizes or even criminalizes "leaks" and harrasses web publishers who are perfectly within their rights to host both inside images and information. Perhaps he ought to stick to refining the products and working out strategies to drive down prices.

No, it was a good idea, just not for here. No hard feelings .

I thought it was a great idea, like why would a person put there job on the line if they have nothing to gain, But for $100 USD... Here is what I think:

$100 for any pictures AND specs relating to a NEW product or major upgrade.

$50 for any hard, solid information regarding processers, specs OR pictures.
