Texas is the only state with its own grid.

Hmmm, that doesn't sound right, and the states up here (New Hampshire, Massachusetts) have been saying how lucky they are to be on their own grids and how they have isolated themselves from neighboring states.

Here in Rochester, NY we have been out of power since 4:30 p.m.

From listening to the news via the radio, it seems as if upstate NY will be getting its power back up by later this evening. However, I doubt it.

Shouldn't have updated the plants to Windows XP! Or maybe Homer dropped a donut and tripped over a wire to reach it!

Nope not terrorists just Republicans and there deregulation. Guess they didn't learn from California. Can we recall some Republicans on the East? Bloomburg? Half kidding. Seriously socialism makes so much sense for running utilities, to protect the environment and reliability, and also against terrorism. Nice to see how America is blaming Canada and Canada blaming America. I'd rather trust CBN, for unbiased news. I like how Bush had to have a pretaped statement and only answer one question. He is so scripted. One of his statements "The most important thing, is to solve the problem." Good call Chief. It's those electronucleotrons. This will at least make some interesting political cartoons!

Damn nice to have an iBook or PowerBook when things like this happen. God forbid power should go out on AI's server!

America blaming Canada? Canada blaming America? Whence did this commence?

ummm... ok. My sister has a Windows 2000 IBM ThinkPad, which runs off a battery when there is no electrical power available. Since our Road Runner broadband connection is down, I am using the dial-up service, which I was surprised that it worked.

However, I am still without power. I guess the original estimate from city people was wrong.

I hope the power is restored soon for all affected. One other interesting thing to note after reading about all the people taking taxi's home is gas at the gas pumps is pumped via electricity so when the taxi's run out of fuel then what?

Again I hope things get back to normal for all affected

My thoughts exactly! I wondered about all the "crisis sex" that will occur tonight. Could make for a good porno theme...

Now for some freaky campfire mental rantings- What if this is the precursor to an alien takeover (ahem, from space, damnit)? Then at 3 AM, they initiate...

impromptu quote from the movie Aliens:

    "They cut the power!

    Cut the power?

They're animals- how could they cut the power?!

I'm getting a big signal here, guys..."

Well, for those of you who can still get online even without power, I'm thoroughly impressed. You get a gold star.

I AM curious: Where are the AI servers located? Obviously not near the N.E.U.S. or Ontario.

It's been really freaky seeing so many shots of a competely dark N.Y.C. -- especially Times Square.

I seem to remember I had something else I wanted to write, but I now seem to be having a brain outage. \

When it went out for me I was at work, and it had rained recently ( the last 4 days) so all the water in the ground was leaking into our junk basement. Within 5 minutes of the power going out there was 2 inches of water in the basement because the sump pumps (yes, it's so bad we need 2) couldn't run. Unfortunately it happened 15 minutes before I was supposed to leave, and I was "volunteered" to stay and help bucket the water out until the generator could get there, which took forever because my boss had to go get it two towns away and the traffic was backed up from the lights being out. And now that the power is back on I have to back there first thing in the morning to open, and I was totally hoping to take the day off and sit back with my friend Captain Morgan.

We're back online in Toronto. Well most of Toronto, anyway.

My Safari bookmarks are gone! What on earth can a power outage do to Safari? I just moved those from Explorer last week, and didn't backup yet. Oh well, I suppose if that's as bad as it is - I'm fine.

Not to brag or anything, but I am impressed with how Toronto weathered this. Average citizens went into intersections to direct traffic, police responded quickly and few reports of any disturbances - though I'm sure the morning will shed light on the full picture.

I haven't heard how the other cities fared yet, but we seem to have come out of it with our heads high.

Power's back here as of early morning here in the New York borough of Queens. I woke up at around 5:30, and everything was back up. The power chose to go out during my rountine software update. Bastards.

It was a fun blackout. Let's do that again, shall we?\

No! My family cannot live with out power, Our last power bill was upwards of 500 bucks, We don`t even have a battery operated clock so when the power goes out our whole family has no idea what time it is

Thats the longest my computer has been out since the last time I screwed up my hard drive and had it off for a day a couple of months ago.

There's a story by Reuters on wired.com saying they don't think it's due to the Blaster computer worm, :lol

I heard about it today, (been busy plus am in the UK) what an annoying thing to happen, just shows how dependent we are on electricity. It struck me as being a large area to be outed though, here in the UK if we get a powercut it's fairly localized although this is probably an entirely different problem.
