I bought a 12" iBook instead of a 15.2" Powerbook because I didn't care about AltiVec, and minimal desk footprint is all I cared about and all I still care about. Sure they could D/C the 12" iBook, if they came out with a 10" iBook with built in drive at under 3lbs. If you want a 14" monitor to carry with you, you may as well buy two 17" LCDs, one for work and one for home...

It's what everyone buys because it's the only thing Dell makes. If people want a larger screen they want the 15. If you're looking for a 12 it's not because of the price, because in the PC world smaller notebooks usually mean a higher price with decreased performance, you're looking for a 12 because you want a small and light notebook. If you want something larger you go for a 15, and above and beyond that you now look towards the 17.

By the same token that the 14 is not inferior in any way, it's not superior in any way, unless you consider a larger screen with an equal resolution superior. Or if you like added weight. 12 seems to be the magic size for a useable sub-notebook. The tiny machines Sony churns out are truly for a niche market, 12 seems to be the smallest you can go and maintain a full featured laptop.

For many, size matters. Though not in the direction you seem to think.

    Ahhhhhhhhhelll...

"iBook will loose the keyboard". The 'foldable' keyboard is a crime against nature. Those little bitty keyboards on PDAs are right up there with foldable keyboards on the spectrum of Bad Design Ideas.

"The keyboard is so 20th century..."

Well;... somebody had to say it! Fran441 can't be expected to keep the sputtering Newton flame alive all by himself! The iTablet is coming! The iTablet (yawn) is coming!

They could create a mouse-typing system. Middle-click switches between mouse mode and keyboard mode, left-click is a 1, right-click is a 0. Only eight clicks per letter!

    LOL. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

I already have a two-button mouse. So all I'll need to do is rewire my brain.

Way back on page 1 Aquatic voiced one of my biggest pet peeves, that the mhz of a G3 in an iBook or iMac crt for that matter should always be less than the speed of the G4's.

The top end iBook should have the fastest G3 on the planet! It would compete with similarly config'ed PC laptops; would attract joe six-pack and the prosumers would avoid it if they loved Altivec.

apple did that before with the "performa's" (was this european only?) you could buy a all black 5400/180 Mhz all in one that had higher clockspeed than the also sold 7600/132Mhz for pro's. (a year later followed by a much higher speed difference between the 5500/275Mhz and the 7300/166Mhz) the difference between the consumer- and professional macs was the processor: 603ev/604-604e.

apple could also do this with the imac/powermac, the difference will be the L3 cache (yeah: a 1.42Mhz imac, now)
