Just as Apple usually release hardware on Tuesdays, they usually release software updates on Fridays.

    I don't think that they'll have a non-G5 release, but I don't know.

Headlines say: G5s are due in stores Monday, so 10.2.7 will be there sooner than later!

So, expect a non-G5 release the Friday of this week?

If the G5s are out this week I would say that there is a good chance that the rest of us will get 10.2.7 this week too.

    The current build is 6R43:

The following is information on Mac OS X Update 10.2.7 build 6R43.

This is an update to Mac OS X v10.2.6.

The 10.2.7 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies:

Audio, Bluetooth, Classic compatibility, Finder, Graphics, LDAP, Power Management, Safari, and FireWire and USB device compatibility.

There are still bugs (concerning the DVD Player) though but perhaps they don't affect the G5s.

By the way, do you have any information concerning the alleged memory leak of 10.2.6? Has it been fixed in 10.2.7 (if real anyway)?

    What memory leak?

The only bug that irritates the hell out of me in Panther is the bug where Macs on AirPort lose the network connection (they can see the base station, but they can't go any further).

You can take a look here. It appears that 10.2.6 does much paging out without apparent reason (or at least more than one would expect from experience with previous versions of OS X and using the same applications).

    I haven't experienced that.

I will give you a simple example: if you saw a machine with 640 MB RAM under 10.2.6, with about 3 days uptime, running only Mail, Safari, Clock, Calendar, iTunes, Terminal, Acrobat Reader, Omniweb 4.5, Preview, Console, Calculator, Print Center, Text Edit, Help Viewer, once or twice UT2003, without any hacks or other system alterations, having about 16 swap files, wouldn't you suspect a memory leak in the OS?

My 640MB iBook is never turned off and I haven't experienced something like that.

I would suspect apps like UT2003 and OW4.5 (especially if it is one of the DPs).

I am talking about the final release. Anyway, it seems that this problem affects only certain machines. I don't know which exactly.

Yes, for the G5 (and maybe the new laptops) there will be a 10.2.7. That doesn't mean there will be one over Software Update for the rest of us. I haven't seen a single bulletin from ThinkSecret, RAILhead or anyone else that says otherwise, and usually they're pretty good about giving at least a few weeks notice.

Why would Apple even bother when Panther is nearing completion? Ignorance indeed.

    Not really, no.

The VM in OS X has a slight, er... peculiarity. It doesn't shrink swap files. The amount of swap space you have is (modulo your swap file size) the maximum amount of memory you've needed since your last reboot.

So if you have all those apps up there gobbling up temporary memory at the same time, voila. Huge swap space.
