Phew, not a real G5 Cube...I was having major league pip-ejaculations...!
(Spraying everywhere...the place is a damn mess...)
That's my idea: Apple mini-tower-Cube for under 1K!
Single G5 1.8-2 gig 0.09 G5s.
I also loved the White cuboid. Very elegant! That was my kind of idea for a headless Mac for the £495 bracket. Business Mac. Stick an Apple badge on that. Very nice.
Although Apple can use the standard G5 tower cabinet to offer single and dual G5s to pad out the 1K-2K market...
...I think we're long overdue some form of headless consumer/business Cube Mac that can over different options to people who DON'T and WON'T on the iMac2/eMac front. Something in the £495 to £995 range.
I await with baited breath what Apple will release for their 20th Anniversary. I hope it's some new Mac. Headless would be nice.
A remix Cube based G5 product? With funky colours? Or elegant tones of white, black and grey? With the G5, Apple has the means to differentiate its product. For me, the Cube is the ideal consumer machine. AND priced accordingly, I think it could've/would've been a hit. AND, yes, I feel many pro's would have loved its quietness on their desks. Trim the skirt and lose the silly grill and I'm there...in love all over again.
I disagree with one of the posters above. I don't see the Cube as a pro or consumer product. Just potential tailored to both. Let's face it. Most machines are powerful in many daily computing respects to be considered 'pro'. Apple challenges perceptions. If there is to be a Cube remix...then it may force us to re-evaluate what a 'Cube' is. They ain't going to release the SAME Cube. No way. But just as one source said 'Once you see the iMac2 you'll realise why we don't need the Cube...' I think once we see the iMac3/anniversary Mac we'll see why we don't need the iMac2 anymore.
Sorry guys, I didn't translate their site only skimmed it. I really thought this guy had made a cube enclosure for a single processor. Oh well. It does look cool though. Again, my apologies to all if I mislead. (didn't mean to).
OT: good to see that this thread has surfaced again, it was my second or third post, I believe. Now here it is again, months (and 860 some odd posts) later.
And I'm still waiting for a new Cube! I'm so spoiled by how amazing this machine is. I don't know how I'll ever buy another computer!
Edit: I forgot how many posts I had, 870 some odd posts later.
i'm still trying to figure out if i think the powerlogix case looks really cool or really tacky. i think the thing that bugs me about it is that the sides run flush all the way to the bottom all the way around. it just makes it look to "canister" like.
but i wouldn't kick it out of bed, or turn it down if it showed up on my doorstep.
The painted powerlogix case is very "EEWWWWW" Glossy black paint. that is not macintosh. I agree, the Japanese G5 Cube thing looks way better, but would be nice if it were made of machined AL

Apple is getting some enterprise attention, and they need an enterprise machine. A cheap, modular system easy to deploy. The cube only missed on the cheap part.
A G5 cube would be a volume enterprise machine. Small footprint for cubicles, quiet, limited expansion, choice in monitors.
I have 5 cubes for my office and they're wonderful. Swap out monitors to meet users needs. I got them for a song on closeout.
$1299 is too high, though. Apple really should be putting G5s in iMacs now (ignore technical issues, the G5s are really screwing up sales of G4s except for laptops and Apple should present the same surprise that we got with the iMac2). Apple needs a headless machine well in the <$1000 range for volume deployment in enterprise when they think they're ready to tackle that market - and they should be ramping it up now.
The sooner they can build a headless, low clockrate G5 with CD+RW with cheap video out for $799 or so, the sooner they'll have a shot at enterprise. It's one of the bigger gaps now that Apple has addressed the small server and virtually all of the OS/software issues. Enterprise doesn't have access to the $599 Dell specials so we're still paying a bit less than $1000 for boxes w/ monitors.
You need to start adding another layer to the pro/consumer structure since a huge percentage of PCs don't fall into either one.

I am glad someone else feels the same way! Small, quiet, headless, inexpensive.

Exactly, I am the owner of a current iMac and G4 Cube and I loved the Cube for everything except its price. For its time it was fairly powerful, perfect size, breathtakingly designed, and functional...the only thing was the prosumer price tag...if only it had been introduced at 1299 not 1799.
So I think we have reached a general consensus that the Cube was too expensive.
A G5 Cube would become the best selling computer in the world (if the price was right). The Cube is legend. Re-introduce it at the right pice and with good specs...Apple would have a huge winner on their hands.
People would still complain like they do the iMac that there isn't enough or the right kind of expansion. Basically, people want to be able to stuff and switch out a beige box tower worth of configs in the rough volume of a Kleenex box without fans. Nothing short is going to please them, and they want it to be $1000 including monitor because, you know, it's smaller.
Exactly. People ask for too much. Yes, the Cube was expensive, but, after using one for 3+ years now, I can say that it was worth every last cent. I'm still in love with this computer. They should just market it as a consumer machine (unlike the Cube, it was marketed more towards pros) because the average consumer will not ever expand his computer beyond the ram and maybe a new HD, both very easy tasks in the Cube.

I was thinking of the 2 handles on the bottom could stay put but there should be a single handle running from the front to the back on top.

I don't like the uninspired top. A very odd and clunky appearance. The sides...run flush like you say. 'Cannister' like.
I liked that Jananese 'mini-G5' fake. Looks amazing. That's more the ticket...

I don't know why anyone would sacrifice a beautiful G4 Cube case for something that looks like that.
The PowerLogix case looks like a car battery.
Ouch. That's harsh, man...

The handles also look stupid on the full tower, but it didn't stop Apple from putting them there.
Not cube. Sphee. [/QUOrTE]
A sphere would be great but when is Mac considering to put out G5 notebooks, G5 iMac and G5 eMac?

The first one looks like it would just roll away, the second one isn't too bad.
But nothing beats a cube, sphere is okay, but can't even come close to the cube.
