probably nirvana. any of them. nevermind is the only title i cna think of right now, but i like em all. or maybe Workingman's Dead by, of course, the Grateful Dead. not the original version, but the one found on the "Golden Years" box set. it's really sweet. mostly live. i'm practically oozing just thinking about it.
if i could make a mix cd, it would soon become obvious to me that i was going to be stranded on a desert island with nothing but this cd (because i dont make mixes often). so i'd spend my remaining non-stranded time moping, and i'd forget about my chance at making the mix-cd.
the idea that you need more intelligence, or have to be "deeper" to listen to centuries old european music is ludicrous.
I don't recall saying that. I said the music should have plenty of layers to permit repeated listening since you're stranded on a desert isle. I listen to plenty of 20th century American music, since I'm not currently stranded on a desert isle. But I do think it's too bad that people overwhelmingly listen to contemporary music, when there's so much great, timeless music from the past.
I think it would have to be something that has really stood the test of time and has many layers to permit repeated listening. Hmm, I guess that rules out the pop/rock music you kids listen to on both counts
Two CDs I was already thinking of...
Butthole Surfers Double Live. It's a double CD though; does that count?
Frank Zappa Hot Rats.
Either one has endless amounts of listening, but are both best as a whole, rather than broken up on a mix.

i originally had "willie the pimp" on it before i jettisoned a bunch of tunes because of their length, (my island would be regrettably jazz-less) i decided that brevity (of the tunes selected) allowed more diversity which would be important. the other reason is that "hot rats" will sound sooo much better 200 years from now when it will have "stood the test of time" with thanks to government grants and rich benefactors who fall asleep in the audience, if they bother to show up at all.

It's actually not a good idea to bring your favourite music. mainly because you will have heard it so much, that you will end up detesting it or vowing never to hear it again when rescued..
That said, I think I will take some heavy metal ..who knows I might even come to like it after hearing 10,000,000 times. 8)

Man, this seemed like a simple question when I posted it. You guys over-think everything!
Open your ears! I love Sgt. Peppers but the world has so much more. Ask to see Superkarate's CD list!
actually my list came just from what was on my itunes, my itunes doesn't have any jazz, or anything that when i listen to it, i listen to the whole cd.
i mean i'd be happy on an island, with a nice monk, "criss cross" or "straight no chaser"
miles "bitches brew" i'd go with the disc that has "miles runs that voodoo down" since i could only have one.
the ellington/coltrane cd would be nice, or "crescent" or "blue train"
dave douglas "charms of the night sky"
but i think i like torifile's idea that taking something less familiar might be a good idea. so i would go with

No contest.
It's been 36 years and still nothing else even remotely close to it.
I don't know...if I was stranded on a Desert island and had just one CD, not much good is it if I don't have any means of playing it

accordian tribe
or
deep polka
because being on a desert island i wouldn't have to hear anyone bitch about having to listen to accordion music.
