Drivers licenses for illegal immigrants - Your take..

Drivers Licenses

In California, they are attempting to give illegal immigrants drivers licenses. The contention is that if they can get a license, they are more likely to also get auto insurance.

There are several security concerns brough up with this issue. Everyone in California, legal or illegal, native born or not, would have to come into the DMV and give a full set of fingerprints. This raises some privacy concerns as to who has access to that database.

Secondary issues also include motor-voter registration. How would you keep illegal immigrants from registering to vote when it is just a checkbox on your license form? (You check it, they register you.)

It requires no background checks, uses tax identification numbers instead of social security numbers, and has no requirement that the illegal immigrant be attempting to become legal immigrants.

While I know there are tons of illegal immigrants here in California, I don't see how to fix this issue and it doesn't seem like this bill would do it. Auto insurance is mandatory in California. However so is being here legally and likewise having a license to drive. So would passing more laws like this fix the problem or make it even larger?

Out of all the concerns for me the biggest one is the voting. There are no provisions to insure that voting registration occurs only for those who are allowed to vote.

What do you think?

If you live somewhere and intend to stay there, you work there and feel home, why would you not be allowed to vote??? 4 % of the population of US is illegal by the way.

Citizens vote, landed immigrants have other rights and privledges and protections under the law, but as the term illegal immigrant implies, ILLEGAL immigrants have not gone through the proper immigration process, they are not entitled to live and work in said place, and so the only right they should be afforded is the right to an escorted cargo plane ride back to the other side of the border

    Oh My God.

Illegal immigration is one of the most serious problems this country faces. I cannot believe you are actually saying that because these immigrants "feel at home" they should all the rights that citizens do.

ID for illegals is absolutely insane.

well, considering how badly people around my area drive, it's obvious that today, driver's licenses aren't worth wiping your ass with, so why not? everyone just drives like they studied for the test with "grand theft auto III" and hopes driver's insurance bails them out of a jam.

    SB60 is a horrible idea.

It essentially will provide the incentive for more illegals to come to California - cross the border and get a legal document from the State that will make it easier to live here illegally and continue not paying taxes, use the healthcare system, use the school system, etc.

One of the biggest problems with this bill is that although those that apply for the license will have their picture and thumbprint taken that database will not be available to law enforcement.

An estimated 700,000 illegals cross the border every year (225,000 in California alone).

This bill will not help things.

Get a hold big boy..Migrants legal or otherwise are the lifeblood and lifeline to yourcountry's viable economic future.

As for my country..Our government is as dumb as yours on this matter..we should have at least another 20 million people....

You wait till the Baby boomers are on the verge of retiring..the country willl go bankrupt because they just won't be able to afford pensions for all of them.

And if you think public health / medical costs are prohibitive now..just you wait...

The only solution to the "aging " problem , is to bump up the proportion of young in your country's demographic profile .

You better do it fast sunny jim..or your staring down the barrel...of some serious problems. just like us...

Its populate or perish....no two ways about it..

This is the basic, really only, problem with illegal immigration. Seems like the best solution would be to make becoming a citizen (and therefore chipping in responsibly) easier. The driver's license thing is inane.

It's been done here in Chicago and so far no problems.

And how do you decide who gets the new form versus the old form? What do we do when a week later the DMV is accused of "racial profiling?"

All SB60 does is declare they do not need to show proof of documented legal status. How does that stop them from getting the right to vote? Since no one is required to show the proof how do you distinguish who gets the motor-voter form as opposed to the non-voter form?

Solution: Open the borders to MUCH more LEGAL immigration. Anyone caught immigrating ILLEGALLY is tossed the f**k out and not allowed back in, ever. Close the loophole that allows illegal immigrants to have kids in the US who are by default US Citizens. Gah. Now I'm going to be called racist by all the "liberals" who hate it when the word "liberal" is used in a derogatory fashion towards them. Gah. Dems, Reps...you are all the same dammit.

Any idea how much California loses each year because you can't ask for proof of legal residence in the united states in order to attend public school? That's just ****ing stupid. Taxpayers should get the benefit of free public education, not tax evaders who are here ILLEGALLY.

SB60 might be bad. I'm just saying you can get illegal immigrants drivers licenses without letting them vote.

"Check here if you want to register to vote and include proof of citicenship here:"

Besides, in California it's easy as hell to register already. Trumptman, do you know how easy it is for illegals to register in your state right now?

I assure you that you will not find me as a supportor of bills like motor-voter that basically open the voting system up to fraud.

The fact that they system is open to fraud means if anything we should remove voter registration from being tied to the possibility of getting your license.

I figured this was your hidden agenda.

My "hidden" agenda? What is so terrible about only having citizens vote?

Honestly, you are hitting me from a direction to which I have no idea to what you are referring.

I was going off your suggestion. You suggested a different form. I simply said that I didn't see how you could sort out who gets what form when you aren't allowed to ask for proof of citizenship. It would also likely open you up to charges of racial profiling. (No matter how unbiased they try to be, more hispanics would likely end up claiming discrimination)

You then claimed it was irrelevent because it is basically easy to commit fraud now. I say, well you won't see me supporting measures to allow voter fraud and now I have a "hidden agenda."

    Whatever...

Sorry, I figured ending motor-voter was the underlying premise of this thread. Voter fraud is bad, we can all agree on that.

I'm not sure you have a good argument here. Would it be illegal to ask all citizens if they have proof of citizenship before getting a license? Because if you ask everyone, then it's not a problem. This seems like a very normal solution. Then anyone, including people here on vacation, could get a driver's license if needed.

Would you, for the sake of others here, please explain how easy it is to register to vote in California. Thanks.

I didn't know we were different from anywhere else in terms of registration. You take a form, fill it out, sign it, they send it to register of voters office and you are registered to vote.

As for the first part, according to SB60, proof of citizenship is not required. I am sure that many hispanic advocacy groups would declare asking for citizenship proof while getting a license to be a form of scaring hispanics into not seeking their voting rights or scaring illegals into not seeking their licenses. Assurances can go out that it would only be used for voter registration purposes but illegal immigrants are more wary of governmental organizations for obvious reasons.

I believe motor-voter has nothing wrong with it, but that it was passed with the understand of only people with legal status be it citizen, or legal immigrant would be the only folks seeking licenses.

There was a version of this bill for licenses passed last year but it was vetoed by the governor because it didn't require background checks. This year, now that he is being recalled, he has said he will sign a bill that requires no background checks, requires EVERYONE to submit a full set of fingerprints, (nothing like having my privacy violated for illegal immigrants) and does not allow you to ask the status immigration status of anyone getting a license.

The claims behind it are to me, bogus. It is claimed that illegal immigrants will buy auto insurance once they can get licenses. I don't see why they would comply with that law when they have already broken the laws on immigration and driving without a license.

If immigrants want to come here, then come here legally. Then, if they want to drive here, then go take a driving test and get a driver's license like everyone else. Enough double standards already.

Illegals are tolerated because of the cheap labor they provide, especially in California. Big agribusiness does *very* nicely from the massive labor pool of illegals....and, it puts fruit and vegetables on the table more cheaply.

    What happened with

this plan , any follow up?
