Moto 7457/7447 - announced
Sorry, not keeping my eye on the ball - but maybe this is news, I received this press release this morning about Moto 7457/7447 chips.
<a href="http://www.ffgb.presscentre.co.uk/news/releasemail.asp?ct=70&ATrk=1&RCip=367&ReleaseID=90 51" target="_blank">http://www.ffgb.presscentre.co.uk/news/releasemail.asp?ct=70&ATrk=1&RCip=367&ReleaseID=90 51</a>
Does that make it "current hardware"!?
Uh, sorry just saw the other thread - could this mean "Moto announces new chips today, Apple announces new PowerBooks tomorrow?". (Because it's Tuesday tomorrow :-)
Release says 1.0 GHz runs at less than 10 watts, they run at up to 1.3 GHz.

HiPerMOS silicon-on-insulator copper interconnect process technology" - from the Newswire release.
About time!
I'm guessing the PM 1.42 GHZ are 7457 chips.

<strong>"Alpha samples of the MPC7457 and MPC7447 PowerPC processors are available today to selected customers. General market sampling is planned for March, with production expected to commence in Q4 2003."</strong><hr></blockquote>
Uh, I suppose I should have read it. :-)
I did read this part though: "Suggested retail pricing for the MPC7457 at 1 GHz is expected to be $189 in 10k quantities."
Sounds relatively cheap, no?
These chips are also 1.3GHz max, so the 1.4GHz must be something else. If these are shipping in March, then it sounds like that's when we may see 15" PowerBook updates, and perhaps even boosts to 12" and 17" machines - no earlier.

No. Maybe. I don't know.
I picked up an Athlon XP2200+ for $125. The new XP3000+ is going for something like $600 retail. I'm guessing the price/performance is somewhere in there, so I'd say it's "okay," not necessarily cheap.

In fact, given the generally poor yields of a new CPU (especially on Mot's fabs) I would expect Q4 production of the 7457 to imply a late winter/early spring product release. They might announce the products earlier, but I actually doubt that.
I know I posted something somewhere about how the 7457 was timed about right for a 'Book revision, but as of now I'm not sure that it is. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> I suppose it depends on how well manufacturing goes. It would have to be going really well to meet Apple's goal of making laptops account for half their sales, though. That's a lot of G4s.

Less than 2GHz. Shared 166MHz bus. 512KB L2, 2MB L3.
AND THIS IS ~NOVEMBER 2003!

Everyone: what is the chance of Apple upgrading the MiTiBook 12" with these? I am going to buy one this weekend but not if it's going to be updated so soon!
Oops I forgot to quote:

It means no new speed bump of the powermac line since november or since the release of the PPC 970 ( i doubt that a 7455 will be able to be clocked above 1,42 ghz).
I hate to say it again, but Motorola really sucks.

While the Athlon is a fast/cheap chip, it's power consumtion/heat dissipation-"problems" is nothing to overlook imo.
<strong>This is sh*t. Utter bullsh*t on the part of Motorola.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Well perhaps you can point out another vendor for low powered chips - the 1GHz is using under 10 watts.
It's clear enough to me what their focus is - and it would seem that doesn't include fast, power consuming chips for desktops.
If the 970 does pan out then I think we're likely to see them in desktop units and 7457/7447s in laptops.
2 years between a f*cking DIE-SHRINK is not good enough! Motorola retards.
