The best bassists are those that don't have solos.

    Richard Davis.

Listen to his playing on Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and try to argue that it gets any better than that.

    Good God, bass solos rule.

Jonas Hellborg is the best bass player in the world. I think. He can do things that even Marcus Miller can't and his music is very beautiful and spiritual and all that good stuff. He plays the acoustic bass guitar a lot. Unless he's rocking out with his avant-garde noise trio. Then he's VERY LOUD. And he can slap this fast: xxxxxxxxxlhjdgv kjhdvgksdjhgvkdjhvgkdjhgvakhjvgaskjdhvgkajshdv

I am not sure that McCartney was intended as a sarcastic response by the person who posted it, nor should he be. Whatever you think of McCartney's often fluffy songwriting (solo, especially), he is widely respected as a musician and frequently appears on serious best-bassists lists. For example, this one. Listen to McCartney's playing on "Rain" - one of the best "unknown" Beatles songs - and tell me the guy is/was not a great player.
