Anyway, I wanted to buy Apple Care, but they (and they say all other computer manufactures) are not supposed to sell iit in the state of Florida...that's it's against the law...what's up with that

Oh well, I'm anxiously looking forward to my new pb...and my wife is looking forward to my modified WS II... ...(500MHz G4, 40 GB Travelstar, DVD, Airport, perfect screen, plus a ton of odds and ends (pc cards, etc.)...she can't wait...

Actually I heard this at Ars Technica http://www.arstechnica.com (go to the forum there --- Ars Open Forum and search), and was quite suprised too. Unintended consequences of a law or not, it prevents AppleCare there.

That thread presents alternatives, I think.

    Launched without problem - yes.

Manufactured without problems that caused significant delays - no.

I commend them for being immediatly available too, but I think they could ahve been ready months ago had they not run in to problems.

iPod gets here tomorrow and my PBook will be here wednesday (I assume)

Just like to say to 666 that I'm not rich just don't have responsibilities yet. I worked all summer 4 days a week (haha...9.5 hours day though) and hardly spent anything. I now have enough to grab a laptop to last me AT LEAST until next year's G5. I probably will wait longer though because I want to get a car. This is all my money I've earned from retouching ugly people's faces and making them look better. And selling some of my stocks next year will help me make purchases.

Just got back from the Apple Store to check out the new 15". MAN WHAT A SWEET MACHINE. Everything I loved about the 17" in a 15" package. Tried UT2003, maxed the res and the details, played just as smooth as my Dual Gig MDD with Radeon 9000. I can't wait til next week when I get mine!!!

yes, it is going to be a long and impatient week indeed. my 1Ghz 15"PB is supposed to ship Friday. 20Gb iPod supposed to ship tomorrow, and Final Cut Express just arrived 2 minutes ago.

i had a really bad experience at the apple retail store so i ordered it over the phone from apple instead. they blatantly lied to me! is it just me, or is the quality of salespeople in those stores less than stellar?

Okay, so the new 15-inch PowerBook arrived today.

I've been using it for about the last hour+, installing applications, and the like. It's a little warm at the moment; noticably moreso than the Ti867 that I'm replacing it with. But again, it's warm -- not hot, not scorching.

The backlit display is very good. It seems brighter than the one on my friend's Rev. A 17-inch. I haven't installed the 10.2.8 because I hear that there may be issues with the brightness of the backlit display and battery life. It had about 1:20 charge remaining, so I have since drained it to sleep, and now on the power adapter recharging (calibrating) the battery.

Back to the keyboard. Typing-wise, it's much better than the Ti. A good solid feel. I no longer feel as though I'm going to pop the keys off like I got with the Ti and iBook.

The SuperDrive is loud. Louder than the one in my TiBook. Loud when you wake up the PowerBook, loud when you insert media. It could be the shell of the PB that's the cause.

The end of the PowerBook where my wrists rest is not rounded off and sharper. It leaves a mark on the bottom of my arms/wrists. Slightly annoying. Of couse, I'm not used to it.

I'm also not used to ports on the side. I took some pictures, and reflectly grabbed the screen to pull it forward to reach around back. But the side ports are much better. Less fumbling, in my opinion.

The speakers are louded and more fuller sounding than on the Ti, but it seems slightly biased to the left. It's probably me. You can hear the midrange speaker through the back of the unit where there are vents behind the keyboard. It reflects off the screen.

It's still got the factory 2x256 RAM modules. I'll probably bump it up when the 1 stick of 1 GB DDR memory is not only available, but cheaper than the prices I've seen.

I feel good about the screen. It's bright, sharp, and as good as the previous Ti, and it doesn't have any dead pixels. It doesn't have the blue bias that plagued the early DVI Ti models I owned that drove me bonkers.

The hard drive is marketed as an 80 GB HD, but it is not really 80 GB. It says capacity is 74 GB, of which, I've already filled 6 GB apparently, cause it now says 68 GB available.

I have read about lousy latches on the 15-inch (and 17-inch), but I must be lucky because mine is perfect, at least the few times I have closed it.

That's about all I can muster at this time, if you have any questions, please ask me here in the forum.

UPDATE: Scrolling seems to be better than on the Ti867. I don't know if it's the Radeon 9600, but when I try iTunes I get between 58-63 frames per second (after I take the frame rate cap off). Also, in so doing, the fan has kicked in. It's quieter than I'm used to with the Ti, but it makes a sort of soft fluttering sound. Oh, as I type it just turned off. The piece of aluminum about the function keys is much warmer than the space where my wrists are resting.

I was going to start a thread about this yesterday! I went to the Apple store in Memphis, and was very disappointed with the staff. They were very nice, but didn't seem to know very many specifics about the products.

Dave, did you fully charge the battery before letting it run out? I just read somewhere else that that is the correct procedure. I hope to be in your shoes with my new 15" in a couple of weeks so I'm just curious.

Nope, I just turned on the laptop and let it drain. I thought my way was the correct procedure.

It is REALLY hot on the backside, and the wrist area is warmer than when I wrote earlier. Much more so than the Ti which was barely warm to the touch. This would, during the hot summer months, make my hands sweat I think. Perhaps the 10.2.8 would fix this?
