    Doesn't the DMCA's wording imply that it only apply to effective methods of copy protection, or can the copyright use any half assed protection they want?

    My understanding is that the law applies to even trivial attempts at protection. It's a part of the law that's under dispute right now.

    Right, which is why there was a bit of huff a while back about the makers of Sharpies being liable for prosecution, if you could defeat the copy-protection by markering over the outermost track. But the law hasn't changed.

    Does slapping a "Do not make illegal copies of this disc" sticker on the CD qualify as a trivial attempt?
