Yes, you can get a 1 GB memory module. Module = Stick = Chip. All three refer to the same thing. Buy buying one GB of RAM, you will increase your computer's total RAM to 1.25 GB.

So, pscates. Have you ordered your new 15-inch PowerBook yet? My new 12-inch PowerBook (Combo drive, 80GB HDD and APE card) is saved in my shopping cart. But I'm desperately trying to wait a few more weeks so that I can get Panther with it and buy the thing witout incurring too much debt.

    Patience, patience, patience...

i ordered the 12" combo. main reason being the price, but portability is a big factor for me as well. but with the money i saved i got extra ram and an AE card, so combined with the monitor i have sitting around in the basement i reckon im on a winner.

yep, im gonna be one happy camper once the bloody thing arrives...

Good quote. Very pragmatic. Almost worthy of my signature.

Same here. I'm big on portability. But price is what will probably clench the deal on the 12-inch Combo instead of a 12-inch SuperDrive or 15-inch.

    Well, guys...

In what is to be my FINAL $#%@#@% decision on the matter...

    Taking into account:

    1. The new 15" seems cursed with a case of Revision A-itis

    2. The G5 will probably be in a portable by this time next year (Steve even said so and he NEVER shows his hand about stuff like that!)

    3. It has been bothering me - as a guy who has never dropped more than $1799 on any Mac - to go out and fling $2599 on one

    4. Realizing that the $2800 I've saved for a 15" SuperDrive PowerBook could buy a BOATLOAD of the other things I'd really want/need if I re-adjusted my plans

    5. I don't burn DVDs. I have no camera, no camcorder, etc. I've had a SuperDrive for 18 months and STILL have my free DVD-R disk that came with my iMac, still wrapped in plastic in the box.

...I've decided to get the $1599 Combo Drive 12" PowerBook next Friday, October 24 while attending the Panther shindig in Atlanta.

But wait, that's not all! (I've always wanted to say that!)

    I will also be getting:

    - Panther

    - Extra power supply (one at home, one in bag)

    - AirPort Extreme Card

    - AirPort Extreme Base Station ($199 model)

    - Bluetooth Mouse

    - JBL Creature speakers

    - 20GB iPod

(right now, I have NOTHING: sold my iMac, iSub, been wanting an iPod, etc. )

Now, depending on what kind of (if any) specials they might be running that night, the above list may be tweaked (I might not get the speakers or the extra power supply right away).

But that $1000 difference between the 12" Combo Drive PowerBook and the 15" SuperDrive model pretty much (within $100, actually) buys all the crap above.

All the accessories above are still good with any future Mac (G5 PowerBook or whatever).

This 12" has 200MHz more than my iMac did, decent (for my needs) graphics, 24x CD-R (which I use A LOT), USB 2.0 (will probably buy a 128MB USB 2.0 thumb drive in November or whenver) AND DVI (if I ever wanted to treat myself to a 17" or 20" Apple display in 2004.

Screw it (again). Just makes more sense. Seems like more bang for the buck. Especially when I look at this as a 12-18 month "stopgap" purchase. It'll be fine. Clients will still be able to see things on screen.

And Escher's passion for the small, light PowerBook (and murbot's nice-looking pics of his) weighed into this, as did the 5 items I list above.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

If you see some schmo at the Atlanta Store next Friday weighed down with a bunch of shit, that'll be me.

Right on, brother. You can accessorize the hell out of yourself with the extra coin you save. Hell, go crazy and throw in a fish taco, a case of Dr. Pepper, and a new orange desk!

    "It's just a stop-gap..." I keep telling myself.

"You can get a 15" G5 next year...maybe a 17" if you're good! Hell, maybe you can even murbot* the 12" and get a REV. B 15" in the springtime, when the latches work and the white spots are a distant memory and there's no warpage to speak of..."

    Repeat as necessary...repeat as necessary...

What a wise decision. As I stated above. So often economic considerations win the day. Why spend $2600 on a 15-inch when you can get more utility and polivalence with a Combo 12-inch and a bazillion accessories?

That's what I call commitment. Right on, pscates!

Bang for the buck, that's what the modest and sensible person's life is all about. Bang! I like the sound of that.

Thank you for the nod, pscates. Now where are murbot's pics again? I'm putting through the order for a multiple-input 17-inch LCD next week. The 12-inch will follow soon thereafter.

I had never posted them here, I sent them directly to pscates when he was toying with the idea of going with the 12" some time ago.

Taken in a crappy office at work, here are the crappy pictures.

They were mostly taken to show its size, and the gap around the sides...

Scates, I'm going to probably be at the ATL Panther thing next week, myself. I'm a student and I'm not going to be using my student discount this year. If you want to save a couple hundred $$, lemme know.

    A Compaq display?

    For graphics?

The 12" Powerbook, I can understand, even applaud, but for graphics, the screen size will become an issue, and you might regret not getting an Apple LCD.

The 20gb iPod must remain as an accessory though!!

    No, a Compaq laptop...and I was JOKING!

I've had a good sleep on it all, and my decision feels even more "right" than yesterday (12" Combo Drive...FOR NOW: we'll see what springtime or next autumn brings, in terms of revved, SOLID 15" or G5 portable of some sort). Especially when I consider that I'll have a mouse, wireless set-up, 20GB iPod, cool speakers, etc. all in one swoop. I'll OD on gadgets and cool stuff next weekend...it'll be GREAT!

And you know what? That new 12" sporting the DVI certainly makes it easy because I TOTALLY see myself picking up a refurb or closeout 17" Studio Display for "serious", at-home work and spanning between the 12" and 17".

Seeing as I don't have ANYTHING, I gotta get one before too long. But I'm a week into a Mac-less period and I haven't died or freaked out yet, so I've got THAT going for me.
