If the rate at which PC users are *switching* to iTunes from competing Windows jukeboxes, I think it is safe to say that Apple hit a grandslam today. It has been just a few hours since iTunes and iTMS for Windows became available and I have witnessed no less than a dozen fellows at work installing it and ditching their other apps.
One of the most enjoyable moments today, was to see and listen to my 14 year old nephew praise and rave over iTunes on his XP-PC. He not only admitted it "rocks", but even called on some of his buddies about his experiences. My 40+ year old brother finally agreed iTunes works great on his PC as I have been telling him on my Mac and even made his first album purchase a few minutes ago (Eagles greatests hits).
There has been some talk regarding the iPod being a sort of trojan horse; iTunes and iTMS for Windows certainly fits the bill as a major coup d'etat.
Did you see the Stevenote? He compared iTunes, Music Match and WMP feature for feature. iTunes is going to blow Music Match and WMP out of the water. Free MP3 encoder at full speed! Free CD burning at full speed! Integration with iPod!
Thanks for the pic. You don't realise how good OS X looks until you see something like this. Sure it is an excellent port that includes a few OS X widgets but the menu bar in the top of the window and lack of anti-aliased text really highlights the difference. I'm looking forward to trying it out.
Please people Smircle is a good poster not a troll. he is right, but in this case Smircle it is a special case. They know what they're doing. It is meant to show Windows users that MacOS X has a better GUI. And yes everyone is right most Windows apps have their own interface. Hell even M$ own apps invent shit that isn't in Windows.
So to steer this topic away from the argument over who is and who is not a bigot, I have a question...
Does anyone know a way to re-enable the old iTunes Internet Sharing from version 4.0 that would allow my Windows computer at work to see the music library on my Mac at home?
I found two Mac OS X solutions?401(ok) and Rendezvous Beacon?that purportedly allow cross-subnet sharing with iTunes 4.0.1, but have no idea whether they will work with 4.1. Besides, I think they both require the application to be installed on the client computer, which in my case is a Windows machine...
I know I'm not the only one out there who wants to do this.

Search the forums the answer lies there. Pretty funny that you switch to an off topic question.
Pretty funny that you switch to an off topic question.
Is this or is this not the primary thread on the feature set and usability of iTunes for Windows? Just because I didn't jump in on the childish back and forth of "you're a bigot" / "no, you're a bigot" doesn't necessarily make my question off topic. I was curious if anyone had an update to the several-months-old discussions about Internet sharing (which I have read), as it now specifically applies to the Windows version. Anyway, sorry to have interrupted, so...

I always thought Apple prided itself of a better understandig of the importance of UI guidelines than MS?
Just choose the "classic" skin in WMP and tell me what you see. Oh, you never knew there was such a thing as configurable skins in WMP? Too bad, but just do me a favor and show me where I can select a "classic" skin in iTunes...
Thus displaying Microsoft's lack of concern for consistant UI. Ever wonder why Apple doesnt have skins Smircle?
So someone said apparently Smircle isn't typically a troll? Did we just witness the birth of one? hehe. Or just a minor lapse in reasoning
When he posts a thread with a topic like this with such weak points to back it up, what does he expect? He obviously doesn't understand why Apple has ported iTunes to the Windows platform or the value of them applying their own UI guidlines to *portions* of the application. If he doesn't want to be percieved as a troll then he should concede to some of the valid arugments here instead of getting all defensive.
When you break it down all we're really talking about in the UI here is aqua scrollbars. Big ****ing whoop. You want WMA files? Don't use iTunes. I don't see Smircle jumping on MS for WiMP not playing .m4a and .m4p. The only really valid thing I see is the poor framerates in visualiser... but for me thats not a deal breaker. One could reasonably expect it to perform better but oh well. Hardly makes iTunes for Windows "not so great".
Looks like a troll... Smells like a troll...
Course its probably gone to far for him to be anyhing but defensive now. Poor Smircle... naaaasty tricksy appleinsidereses..wants to takes the preeeecious...
Oh I forgot.. I DO have one thing Smircle can use.
I think iTunes install switched my recording input from Microphone to Wave/MP3 in my Sound and Audio Devices Settings --> Voice --> Volume --> Options --> Recording. Thus not allowing me to talk on Ventrilo (a PC voice comm program) until I dug through the asanine settings tabs maze, and switched it back. How about that for a user friendly path in the UI to set your input? Gah I hate how Windows buries some things.
I dont know what iTunes needs Wave/MP3 set as the Recording Input for... I'll have to keep an eye on it. Haven't tried ripping anything yet.
Window actions located in top-right of window...? Check.
References to Windows-specific actions (e.g. "Exit," not "Quit")...? Check.
System tray commands (as opposed to the WM9 "screw guidelines" on-the-taskbar controls)...? Check.
Am I missing something here? So the scroll-bars are thematically Aqualicious. Even if you visit a damn Web site in IE, the scroll-bar is apt to change with the design of the page.
A lot of Windows die-hards will not touch iTunes with a six-foot pole, because it is a Mac-app running on windows, not a windows port.
I have been using Windows since Windows 95., and been developing on it...until Java took over.
I have tried every single well-known media player since then. Not a single one of them comes even closer to iTunes for Windows.
This app really ROCKS!!! and the UI is LOT cleaner than what Microsoft could ever do till now with Windows or Media Player [including longhorn as of today]!!!
Oh btw, I have uninstalled Windows Media Player 9 today...after I used iTunes for an hour or so...And so did uninstall musicmatch[installed it before ephPod], winamp [good bye mate!!]...
I am really happy with the way everything works the way it is expected to be....
Oh, I guess I will want to boot my PC as soon as I buy the next release of iBook and use it for a while...
To sum up, I was a windows fanatic..., no apple switching ads changed my opinion... But, iPod did, what those loads of ads could not... I am happily joining the bandwagon of those lucky mac users... soon!!!
Thanks Steve and all those coders who developed this wonderful app...!!!
Man, you can tell the Mac comunity is full of designers! A muisc announcement turns into an argument about interface design!! LOL.
Actually, I see only one complaining that iTunes for windows violates Window's UI guidelines. There's always one on two in the crowd that hate whatever Apple does, no matter how superior it is compared to what's out there.
I always thought Apple prided itself of a better understandig of the importance of UI guidelines than MS?
Actually Apples does, and using that logic, what were people on the windows side asking for? ITUNES! they wanted it to look and act just like the mac version, and what did they get, Itunes that looks and acts just like the mac version that still adheres to windows interface guidlines(it has the min, max, close buttons in the right place, and evne has the menus on that top bar), so I would say it follows both windows and apples itunes guidelines quite well
It's always amusing to see how the same people who cry foul murder if an application on their OS has a windowsian look-and-feel are completely incapable to transfer this to how users on other platforms might feel.
I haven't seen a single Windows-user that didn't like itunes today. Three of them have already installed it. Since most of them like the whole MacOS they will probably switch as soon as possible.
And by the way, I have to use a lot of Windows Computers and am veeery glad to have a really good music app now. At least one working app on my PCs. Musicmatch has been erased Yesterday at night:-)!!

OK bloke, go ahead and show me how to play WMA with iTunes.
Who the heck in their right mind would want to do that?
- You can't put them on the iPod, the #1 player.
- The quality sucks
- The DRM sucks
- There are plenty of Gates-kissing players that will play them.
If iTMS continues to gain share, those players will be FORCED to play AAC or lose the whole market to iPod.
UNLESS... Gates made them agree NOT to support AAC as a condition of getting the WMA license. If that's true, they are completely screwed.

If I were Music Match, I would be worried.
Where's that comparision <interested>

Does iTunes look different than other Windows apps? Yes.
Does it provide a better, more Mac like experience for Windows users? Yes.
Does it achieve these goals precisely because it does NOT follow Windows UI guidelines? Yes.
Is this the whole F&*%^*$ point of porting the app in the first place? Yes!
It's always amusing to see how the same people who cry foul murder if an application on their OS has a windowsian look-and-feel are completely incapable to transfer this to how users on other platforms might feel.
