There is NOTHING wrong with Apples network layer in OSX, just badly configured networks and computers.
I've already mentioned in another thread that I have no trouble connecting to my Windows file server... just that I can't find the server via simple browsing. I shouldn't have to type "smb://blah.blah.blah" to mount a file share.
I used to be able to browser to my Windows file server while running Jaguar. Since updating to Panther, I can't. Another Mac on the same network, which has not been updated to Panther, can still browse to the Windows file server, just like it always could.
A fresh-out-of-the-box eMac with Panther pre-installed can't browse to my Windows file server either. Updating to Panther from Jaguar vs. a fresh install of Panther doesn't seem to make a difference.
The network hasn't changed. The configuration of the Windows XP system hasn't changed. The only difference I can see between success and failure in browsing Windows file servers is Jaguar vs. Panther.
You could well be right that there's nothing wrong with Apple's network layer in OS X. But it seems fairly certain that something is broken in Panther, be it the part of the network layer responsible for browsing Windows file servers, or some place between that functionality and the Finder's interface to network browsing.
crap... while smb://blablabla works, even when you are asked to authenticate and you check "REMEMBER THE FREAKING PASSWORD IN KEYCHAIN" it doesnt. Good thing Guest shares have easy passwords

Pinging the servers/shares works. I get replies.
Good catch with the SMB://-name- thing... it works! Managed to connect to a couple servers I could remember off the top of my head.
Now then... if they'd just SHOW up on the Network "browser"
