Who are your top music vocalists?

I'm not speaking about songwriting, but pure vocalizing. You may even despise the singer's music, but can deny their vocal range(ie. Celin Dion).

Of course there so many genres that picking one definititve singer is impossible. Just a few to star the ball rolling...

Pop - Sarah McLauglin, Karen Carpenter

Jazz - Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra

Opera - Pavarotti

A few regardless of genre. I base mine pretty much on whether I could ever imagine someone else doing justice to a song sung by them.

    Freddie Mercury

    Steve Perry

    Mariah Carey

    Bono

    That's a decent start...

These people would take vocal? pure vocal.

    Josh Groban? he'd take first.

    Andrea Bocelli- takes close second.

    Joseph Paur? third.

    The Three Tenors?somewhere here.

As far as Rock/Pop/Etc, they'd be the following? (not in this order)

    Celine Dion

    Sting

    Bon Jovi

    Mr. Tyler (aerosmith)

    Dave Gahan

These are just to start off with, may come back later with fully revised list..time to start the turkey.

People who like Andrea Bocelli are the same people who think the Olive Garden is fine Italian cuisine.

    Yeah, I said it.

I'm glad nobody's mentioned Charlotte Church, who was plucked much to young and ruined by Sony Music.

Chinney beat me to it but i second Sam Cooke. I have a 28 track CD which is my desert island essential. Then it's Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Aretha. You've gots to have soul.

Have you listened to any of Sam Cooke's work with the Soul Stirrers? Whether or not you are religious, it is great and powerful stuff. A boxed-set I recently acquired includes, among many other recordings, Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers doing a live rendition of "Nearer to Thee" that is about 9 minutes long - raw and soul searing - and features the audience completely losing control by the end of the song. Also I recommend "Sam Cooke Live at Harlem Square Club". Absolutely sends me.

No doubt Alex. Is the 28 track Sam Cooke CD a Best Hits album? I'm interested in that.
