So I got the xbox, and I have mixed emotions about it. Long story short, I want a PS2 instead.
The graphics are great, but just not enough to justify it. In terms of game play, the controllers are better on the xbox, but putting the cheats in on the gta/vice city double pack is a MASSIVE pain. The directional controller is just too sensitive or something. This makes the game really annoying to play.
Then we have the fact that there just aren't as many games for it. Blockbuster doesn't have as many to rent, and there are a ton of cool games that are only on playstation. For example, Red Faction 2 is on Xbox and PS2, but the original is only on PS2. GTA V is going to be coming out on playstation first, too. It seems like the only good game coming out for xbox is halo 2, and one game is not enough to make it worthwhile. It's almost like apple where you have to wait for later releases of games that sell well.
If you go to gamespot and look at the games for xbox compared to PS2, you see that ps2 has a lot more unique and creative games, while the xbox seems to have mostly games piggy backing on the success of some movie or something. It's like the difference between walking into a mall and walking into a comic book store. I feel almost like the xbox is a trojan horse for advertisement, even if I'm just exposed to it while I sift through the junk looking for the one or two good games.
After just a few days I already miss my PS2. I really took it for granted. There are so many weird games for it that the money spent on it feels justified. This xbox, on the other hand, is already on the verge of just sitting on a shelf under the TV unused after a week or two. Sure, every once in a while it might come out when I rent one of the few games at blockbuster, but there just aren't enough interesting games to keep it in constant use.
Graphics absolutely don't make the system. Who cares whether or not there are reflections on the cars in vice city (like anyone would ever notice) when the cheat codes are such a pain to enter? Who cares if the wall in one of the two or three decent xbox games looks a little better than on PS2? What's better, a bunch of good games with graphics that are good enough you never think about it, or two or three good games with better lighting that doesn't add anything to the game?
Anyway, I guess I'll just suck it up. I made a mistake with the xbox. Life goes on.
The worst part is that it was a present, so it would be rude for me to get rid of it. Oh well. I still might sell it if anyone really wants it.
timing is everything. and obviously Sony got it downz. they placed the first ps down at exactly the right time to kill of N64, and they placed the PS2 a year before all the new consoles to get that rolling snowball started. I'm sure they'll place the PS3 at the right time too... and with millions of happy PS2 users, they'll switch to the newest system... kinda like us Apple users, swarming to get the newest OS
Since buying my X-Box a year ago and aside of getting the included games (Halo, Sega GT 2002 and Jet Set Radio) I have only brought one game for it, Panzer Dragoon Orata. I brought about 4 games for my GameCube and 4 for the PS2.
I can not afford (money & time wise) to play many games so I am extremely picky which games get my time and hard earned money.

i picked up some great used games for my Gamecube.
to this day, when we all get together to game, the gamecube is the one we play on 80% of the time. not sure why exactly, but their games are just a lot more fun.

It's because the best multiplayer games are on the GCN. Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Monkey Ball, Super Smash Bros Melee, ect.
So what are some more of the good multiplayer gamecube games?
Well, in my personal preference, this would be the order of best multiplayer games on GCN: Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Mario Golf, Super Monkey Ball 2, Mario Party 5, Time Splitters 2, and Super Monkey Ball. Those should cover all your multiplayer needs until the N5 comes out.
although it's only two player, Ikaruga is a great cooperative game. hard though.
oh yeah, and if you have a projector FIFA is a ton of fun.
Ikaruga is INSANE. A buddy brought it over a couple months ago and we just put it on unlimited deaths and beat it in 10 minutes or something, but I died so many times it was ridiculous. That's a totally different kind of game than I am used to.
i just got a ps2 myself (after a bit of a snafu with some gift certificates and my haste, i just paid for it out of my own pocket). i had one game: Prince of Persia (sands of time). The only other PoP game I played was back in like 8-bit days, on a 386 at my brother's friend's house. i hated it. But sands of time is quite awesome. after playing that for 3 straight days (i beat it; hoorah!), i bought gta:vc. these two games alone (totalling 179(system)+free(pop)+25(vc)+25(memory card)=230) have made it worthwhile for me. i played PoP a few hours more even after beating it, and its still fun. maybe i just like throwing money around like a drunken sailor, but i am really enjoying these two games. i don't know if these games are out for xbox, or how they compare if they are, but i am more than satisfied. the fact that the system is also a dvd player (right? i think i read that somewhere), puts it over the top. this is one satisfied customer. but i should note: the vc cheats aren't exactly easy to remember or punch in (yet, i guess) on ps2. they are pretty long, like 10 buttons after each other, and i keep messing them up, unless i'm staring at the cheat guide. its like they deliberately took any easy sequential pattern, and threw a X or O in the middle to throw me off. it's easier to just play it raw, and avoid pain/death/cops.

Oh, you'll get used to them. After a day or two of using them over and over it becomes second nature. To do the whole left, down, right, up bit just roll your thumb on the pad.
Anyway, just wait until you try putting them in on an xbox. Now that's rough!
Who cares which console has the better sales figures and why. Get the system that has the games you want to play. I enjoy both myy Xbox and Dreamcast. But I've also have had good times on the PS2 at my friends. Wish i could say that I've play a GC, the games do look fun.
I had an idea where a console would be used with a mature online package where you rent your games from the company through the web and pay per play. You pay for temporary access to the servers with that game and it downloads the parts of the game you need as you need it to your console. It then wipes the game data from console except for your save files.
The XBox is nice because you can hack it pretty easily, toss in a big Hard disk, and have 137GB of onboard storage to load games on. Once they're on disk, they load wicked fast.
The PS2 is nice because it has Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo. . . Why anyone would want to play another racing game is beyond me. The ones for Xbox, simply put, suck.
Project Gotham is worthless. What a dumb game: bad controls, bad premise. SegaGT is OK, but it's too easy and many of the cars don't behave like they do is real life. (needless to say, in Project Gotham realism is not a concern for the developers). There's something to be said for a game with awesome courses, tons of cars, and accurate handling. . . Plus, you can't race a 787B in the other games.

yeah, yeah, yeah...
I do actually feel a little better about it now, though, so long as I don't get too bored with shooters.

I like the bigger ones over the new S type. I guess I have bigger hands.
