What consumers are you talking about? The ones that dont deserve to have a mac in the first place, I mean come on, if they dont know anything than why isnt a $400 e-machine good enough for them?
By the way, I think it is wonderful that Circuit city isnt selling Apple stuff anymore. If somebody goes in there to buy a computer then, well.
What consumers are you talking about?

The ones who buy an entire system, use it as is until it dies or becomes uncomfortably slow or incapable, and then replace it with a whole new system. (Printer, monitor, CPU, etc.)
That would be almost all of them.
Never mind that Apple has never put an upgradeable GPU in the iMac; I'd love to see how they could put one into the current design.
The iMac is a set-and-forget computer. That's not a bug, it's a feature.

A lot of people also dont care about features and the only feature that they care about is $.
People go into a Circuit City and buy a computer based on what a salesman tells them not based on their research.
The iMac isnt "revolutionary" enough to make people buy it based on specs, and specs are what PC buyers want. You can get a nicely "speced" PC for $1,800 that does all of the normal computational things twice as fast as a new imac.
I would probably buy a PC but Apple has some great free software that makes up for hardware shortcomings.
Actually, i would never buy a PC simply because I love the Mac OS and it would take getting used to the PC.

You're right, but based on design and looks it is revolutionary enough, and that will sell.
I still contend that being "revolutionary" isn't everything it's cracked up to be.
Also, most people (the ones who look at MHz & price alone which is to say most people) have no interest in a revolutionary computer. It won't win converts for having an upgradable cpu or gpu. The vast majority of computer users never upgrade their RAM. It's not meant to be that kind of hassle. Really. apple doesn't have to be all things to all people. another 5% market share would be nice. Another 95% would be a disaster.
If you want expandability, get a PMG4. That's where you'll get the replaceable GPU, CPU, HD, etc. The iMac is meant to be a once and done purchase. You can get a new PMG4 800 with your precious 17" CRT, for just about the same price, so if you want expandablility, do that.
First of all, something tells me it was your parents, and not you, that dropped 2 Gs on the computer.
Second, frankly, I hope your LCD has dead pixels. I hope you call Apple to moan, and demand a new computer, etc. And I hope they bitch slap you into reality. There is no way Apple is going to bend over backwards because your consumer mac's display has a couple of dead pixels. I know people who have spent more on their monitor than you ? ehh, your parents spent on your whole computer. Apple didn't kiss their asses. Don't keep waiting for them to kiss yours; you might catch a cold.

It is selling, and that is good. The main reason it is selling though is because it is the only thing even close to revolutionary on the market.
It could have been introduced as a more capable machine though.
100 MHz Bus?

Apple needs to distance themselves from the rest of the world, not from themselves.
An upgradeable GPU would be really nice. A 133 MHz bus. 2 open Ram slots.

They can get a tower.

Would you rather it have a 66MHz bus like the 500MHz iBook?
Nothing you asked for, not even the original specs, are revolutionary.
