A few years back, David Letterman was commenting the night after a show about how this made-for-TV-movie used the word "Bull sh*t", and he showed the clip, and the word was presented in its full glory, but whenever he said the word, it was censored, and he kept showing the clip a couple of times, and it came through loud and clear, but he kept getting censored.
It must be a context thing.
Over a decade ago, ABC (?) had this "Winds of War" fictional movie that showed the Nazi gas chambers, and I remember being stunned at seeing full-frontal nudity on American prime-time TV, as deomonstrated when they were getting the people ready for the "showers".
I remember the reports after September 11th were not censored. They were interviewing people and didn't bleep anything out because it just didn't seem appropriate to bleep things out.
Also, there was another TV movie involving Nazi Germany, also where they showed nudity (albeit at a distance), and that aired just two or three years ago. I remember it had Hank Azaria.
TV could stand to be more lenient, but at least the censors are willing to make a few exceptions here and there.
F*cked up sense of priorities in this country. Maybe I should move to europe where this stuff is acceptable. - Luca
They are only boobs.... have you never seen any before? It's amazing that the US is still so repressed. Why is it that there are breasts displayed on television and covers of magazines all over Europe with no problem.
- Akumulator
the AI canadian contingent can back me up on this, but censorship for things such as boobies and the f word are much more lax up there, and it didn't seem to make that country fall apart - rok
God, europe's so much more relaxed, you know? - Defiant from Switz.
And if we grew up with things like that, we wouldn't think twice about it. If America were like this I think things would be better here. Everyone's so uptight about everything here - Luca
That's the key right there. People with nothing better to do with their time than get offended by stuff. People need a life. The human body is such an amazing thing, it's a shame that it is so hidden here in America. -DMBand0026
We were founded by the frickin' puritans... we never had a chance. Pity us - Kickaha
Hi Guys -
I agree SO much with the above quotes. I really, REALLY resent the influence the Puritans had on us.
Most of us are not even aware just how repressed we are compared to other nationalities of the west. I began participating in British messageboards a year ago, and made some great friends. I have found out how different Americans are - our whole society and 'mores' - from the Brits and the Europeans. And maybe even the Canadians.
It is really most disheartening and infuriating. I always thought of British males as being polite, reserved, and maybe a little stodgy. Well, HELLO! You cannot imagine what they are really like. They are SO much more sexually liberal than we Americans. It is depressing, actually.
Our whole culture is repressed, uptight, and plagued with eye-brow-raised do-gooders who, as was said above, have no lives of their own, so spend time trying to repress the lives of others.
President Mitterrand had a wife and a mistress. NO ONE cared. Over here, a presidency was nearly brought down for similar matters.
BBCi - a British government-sponsored, publically supported site, has a place in the Health section where advice is given to people on how to improve their sex lives. There are also ?sexual health? messageboards at this govt./public site where people give each other graphic and explicit advice on how to get more sexual pleasure from their relationships. Could such a govt./public site exist in the US? I doubt it.
If most of us knew how ripped-off we have been by the Puritan morality in our country, we would just sit down and cry! All I have to say is that I will be off to England the first chance I get!!!!!!!
Anyway, it's not so bad in real life. europeans aren't quite as nihlisitic as they are sometimes portrayed, and Americans aren't as tight-assed as they're sometimes portrayed. I feel like so much of this has more to do with media being intimidated by the risk of lawsuits and bad press among their peers when niche groups on either side of the table cry foul. I don't think most Americans are so uncomfortable with this stuff, but they are taught to think that everyone else is, so they don't want to offend.

Are you replying to me??? I can't tell.
I'm saying that Brits and Europeans seem so much more comfortable with their sexuality than Americans.
The religious right here is so influential. Instead of sex being a natural, joyful thing, they seem to regard it as dirty, unseemly. That attitude can't help having an impact on lots of people, thereby diminishing the natural pleasure in their lives. I just think it is sad, and it makes me angry. Maybe no one agrees.

I guess you would agree, if you spend as much time as apparent in the 'address' you mention!
But think how this Puritan strain in the US has affected us, imo.
The religious right spent eight years trying to bring down Clinton for sexual reasons. They basically incapacitated his presidency, and siphoned away time and energy that the administration should have spent elsewhere.
And what happened in the meantime? Russia, a fledgling, potential 'democracy' at the time, veered toward becoming a gangster state, instead of getting encouraging, economic nudges in the right direction from the premier democracy on the planet.
Pakistan and India went nuclear, while we were busy worrying about Whitewater, Paula Jones and Monica Lewinsky. And now what do we have? Radicals have tried to assassinate Musharraf twice in two weeks. Nuclear weapons in the hands of Islamic radicals? Fantastic. Just what we need. And yes, I do blame it on Puritanism.
I mean, think about it! All kinds of major developments were in the process of occurring in the world; but the religious right pressed their obsession against Clinton and about sex on our whole nation to the exclusion of all else. US influence was almost absent from the world scene during those years because of it.
Sorry. The thread started off talking about breasts. I apologize for getting carried away and side-tracked. My comments on breasts? Well, I have some of my own, of course. And, yes, breasts are quite nice. I think the in-shape body, male and female, is magnificent - a work of art, really.

Yeah it's cool when chicks don't wear bras...as long as they aren't card carrying members of SAG.
