Dude. . . being a vegan is retarded.

The supplement industry is basically not regulated at all. So most of the vitamins out there for vegans, which promise to provide the nutrients that come only from animals, are made from animal products. If it doesn't explicitly say "no animal products," I guarantee it has animal products in it.

Dead serious. I've met some of the guys in the supplement industry. You'd be surprised how many of the drugs in GNC come from one-person companies.

    Veganism is a bit much

but, being a veggetarian does not mean that you need supplements

I was a veggetarian for many years . . . and as I said: I felt better than ever

now as for the topic: to repost:

anyway, people's: stay away from beef: MCD has a 7-10 year latency period where it cannot be detected well, it can not be burned . . . it survives even in the ashes of the meat, it turns brains into sponges and when people get it one of the symptoms of teh always fatal desease is FATAL INSOMNIA . . . . . can you imagine a worse way of going!

so what do you think this will do to the meat industry, do you plan on continuing to eat meat?

we don't have the same feeding policies they had in great britain at the time of their outbreak. (if you remember they fed diseased beef to other beef which is how it spread so quick and vast.) the FDA say the risk of further contamination is minimal, but will it change your dining plans?

    veggies, oh do chime in!

we do feed waste product back to the livestock.

    it's disgusting

it is disgusting, but i thought the practice was stopped when they realized that's how it was spread in great britain. (feeding cattle to cattle)

does it worry us the the ag secretary was once a spokesperson or lobbyist for the meat industry?

Why is it that after a year of experimenting with vegetarianism, when I finally start to ween myself out of it and back into eating meat, that 'the dreaded mad cow disease' surfaces in the states?

well, back to veggies for me!

If the new is confirmed it's a very bad new for US farmers.

In UK and France, the mad cow disease hurted seriously the beef market.

People tended to become hysterical and will stop to eat cow. When the disease started in France, some people told me that they won't eat beef meat anymore. I told them it was stupid to stop now things where under control : you have eaten uncontrolled and potentially dangerous meat since months, and now the cow disease is detected you stop.

Korea, Japon and some others countries just stopped the importation of US beef. MacDonald's share are in very bood shape either.

Mad cow disease is a very bad new for economy. Let's wish that it's a lonely case.

    One simple solution: quit beef.

this is from the fda's foreign agriculture services webpage, it says it was banned in 1997, are you saying it's not being adhered to, or am i missing something?

entire herds have been confiscated because bone meal has been found in feed. obviously the quote below was written before this week's discovery.

    QUESTION:

Why does the United States prohibit the feeding of protein derived from mammals (bone meal and meat meal) to ruminants?

    ANSWER:

FDA regulations are intended to prevent the establishment and amplification of BSE in the United States through feed and thereby minimize any risk to animals and humans. FDA regulations focus on animal feed ingredients because epidemiologic evidence gathered in the United Kingdom suggests an association between an outbreak of a ruminant TSE, specifically BSE, and the feeding to cattle of protein derived from sheep infected with scrapie, another TSE. The BSE in cattle in the U.K. was amplified through the feeding of meat-and-bone meal derived from carcasses of cattle infected with BSE. BSE has not been diagnosed in the United States, and the FDA prohibition is intended to prevent the establishment and spread of BSE in the United States through feed and thereby minimize any risk to animals and humans.

    QUESTION:

When was the prohibition put into place?

    ANSWER:

This prohibition has been in place since June 5, 1997.

the fact that there is a suspected case indicates that there may be feeding of ruminant waste to ruminants. The disease in most animals is associated with consumption of animal material often canibalism (although there were several cases of the disease in humans in Kentucky that ate squirrels). Presumably consumption of lesser related species eg fowl and fish would decrease the chances of the spread of prions but that hasnt been proven, nor really has the connection of the human disease to cattle, It is a presumtive connection, because what human is willing to have infected cow brains injected into them.

The misfolding of the protein is intriguing, but that is my particular interest and not the topic at hand.

i don't know. when watching CNN, the author of Mad Cow USA went on for a while about how it hasnt been banned in the US and will likely cause major problems now.
