Cattle get sick by eating feed that contains tissue from the brain and spine of infected animals. The United States has banned such feed since 1997.
"Here's the problem. The feed ban has been grossly violated by feed mills," Stauber said in a telephone interview from his home in Madison, Wis.
In one such case, X-Cel Feeds Inc. of Tacoma, Wash., admitted in a consent decree in July that it violated FDA regulations designed to prevent the possible spread of the disease.
Unfortunately, there will be always people trying to cheat in order to get some money. These dumb people violating the law, could have imported the illness, and may hurt seriously all the US beef market.
I have been on a no Beef diet for about five years
Its very UN-strict, I even had Whoppers several times last semester . . .but, I did research on BSE several years ago after eating dinner with a leading scientist studying prion protean formation at teh University of Minnesota . . . the things he told me about latency period, the indestructibility of the infectious protean and the way that it works scared me away from a care-free beef heaven
o, tommorrow night, for instance, we are having a big dinner and we are having a dish that usually uses beef but we are using buffallo . . .
I'll see in ten years if the beef diet has kept me clean
I was prepared not to worry about this scare, but after reading your post, I guess I'll have to.
Did you read about the south seas islanders who ate the brains of their dead as a way of honoring their ancestors' wisdom? Is that where brain-wasting was first detected?
Is it true that only the brain and spinal cord carry the disease in affected cattle, or is that hogwash?
I was a low dairy vegetarian for a long time and was probably never healthier . . . rice and beans with olive oil and yeast flakes!!!!! its actually REALLY GOOD!!!
Tofu, Tempeh . . . protein is easy to come by if you just get a little educated as to what sort of food combos to make
I got on a cod fillet kick for six months (a few years ago). I baked a really thick chunk of cod each day when I got home from work.
After six months, my system was so cleansed that I couldn't stand the smell of meat cooking. It totally grossed me out.
I've read books about the long-range reconnaissance patrols - LRRPs - (lurps) during the Vietnam War. The really cautious American lurps would eat exclusively the same diet as the Viet Cong - fish heads and rice.
Why? Because the rancid sweat of meat-eating American soldiers could be smelled by the VC in the jungle from far away. Kinda blows your cover when your fragrance arrives an hour before you do.
The misfolding of the protein is intriguing, but that is my particular interest and not the topic at hand.
I'm new here. Does someone come jump in the thread and smack people around if they get off-topic, or what?
I personally think some of the most interesting discussions on any messageboard come about from posts that slide off-topic for a while.
After all, isn't that how REAL conversations, in person, actually work? If you are chatting with someone, no third party is there to force either of you to stick to a topic!
Can't we be REAL? WHY can't you talk about the misfolding of the protein? I think plenty of people would be interested in hearing something about that.
But then, as I said, I'm new here and not familiar with all the "strictures" that have been imposed. (No offense, but I just hate strictures...of any kind!)
Unfortunately, there will be always people trying to cheat in order to get some money. These dumb people violating the law, could have imported the illness, and may hurt seriously all the US beef market.
That's sad, but it's life.
Maybe for their punishment, they should be required to eat the beef they have tried to weasel into the US market.
See how they fancy the idea of waiting for their brains to turn to sponge...
Okay, so that's cruel and unusual. But it perfectly befits the crime, don't you think?
How much worry did they spend thinking about 'their' possible victims? Not one second of concern, I'll bet. Just thinking of lining their pockets.
I guess NO ONE seems to think terrorism is involved here, do they? Just a thought.
That can only be a good thing. Who would eat anything other than 'organc' meat, (assuming you're not a veggie), knowing what goes into 'commercial' cattle feed anyway? YUK! Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, the brain malady known as mad cow disease, usually afflicts cattle that have eaten contaminated bone and protein meal made from the remains of other infected ruminants. Cows are herbivores, for chrissakes....when you feed materials to animals that their systems are not designed to cope with....bad stuff happens. It's a no brainer. The things some people do to cut corners in order to maximize profits....sheesh
Did you guys see this? I have to confess to being in shock. Dean wants federal aid to combat the mad cow problem. I love this part the best:
Quote:
Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean (news - web sites) says the Bush administration missed an opportunity to soften the impact of the country's first mad cow scare and that the American beef industry should receive federal aid to weather the crisis.
Oh wait...then I saw this:
Quote:
This just shows the complete lack of foresight by the Bush administration once again," Dean said. "This is something that easily could be predicted and was predicted."
I mean come on. Really. That's just silly. Now we're trying to score points on Bush for mad cow disease?
