Here's hoping someone at Apple may consider this market research...
Here's hoping that they don't. Mac geeks make up a very small minority of Apple's total user base. If Apple always listened to us rather then their larger customers there would be no Apple today.
Applenut, I see no reason whya top ens iMac cannot have a single G5, believe me there would be a market for it. I really want a 20" iMac but I am NOT going to buy another machine with a G4 period. Pro machines should be duel and consumer machines should scale the difference.
The eMac is very much an entry level meachine. If Apple drop the eMac it will be because they have found a way to bering down the price of the iMac.

Best post so far! So true, too!
"Yeah, I need FireWire 1600 and, uh, let's see...minimum 256MB graphics and, oh, let's see...can we have an octo-processor? And how about USB 3.0? USB 2.0 is for pussies and lightweights. You see, I'm a porn addict and a lame-ass gamer with no social skills...AND I've got a bootleg copy of Photoshop and all I know I learned from Kai Krause...I NEED all the muscle I can get because I might have a job someday where my knowledge of assault mortars, lesbian threesomes and Guassian Blurs all converge. Wait...what? You mean, I have to BUY this system I just spec-ed out? $6,899? No way, man. I'm just sayin' IF I had a dream Mac. Anyway, do you want to upsize that fries and drink?"

Sounds like a PC user. PC users (that typically write that stuff on forum's) are people who crave speed for gaming. Mac users (who, again, post stuff on forum's) are doing so because their productivity in muscular applications is lacking.

Just a thought.
Maybe. Then again, it's so easy to get your hands on these "muscular applications" for free, that any 13-year-old can suddenly come down with the very first symptoms of sperwhoritis, which, left untreated, sets them up for a life of chasing phantoms and bitching about it.

Good point. I kinda like the way Macromedia deals with pirating in MX 2004. You must contact them to unlock the software. Clever, until someone cracks that little scheme I suppose. Oh well, they do what they can.
As for a next gen iMac, I really think Apple would be well off offering an eMac/iMac (in other words, shitcan both and develop something new) that offers a add-on-type arm so those AIO lovers can have their AIO, and the rest of us simply order the headless version with the "arm-whole cover" capped off.
Specs are specs, but they gotta get more close to the low end PowerMac to be successful. There is just too much of gap, beit perceived or real.
You know, I haven't considered that: a cool, "double-duty" type of design, that, done right, could satisfy most everyone: a modular design where an AIO configuration is sold (with a 17" or 20" LCD) OR a "sans display" model can be purchased, to use with the display of one's choice.
One design, one core set of specs. I trust Ive and the gang to be able to come up with something that looks really gorgeous either way (AIO or standalone CPU).
Hmmm...
Kinda like the thing I always called for about the iMac: have the displays removable, where owners of a 15" could take it to an Apple service center and pay to have the 15" replaced, with a 17" or 20" popped on instead.

Bingo, just open the LCD-arm-hole cover and pop out the old, and in with the new. Kinda like a vacuum cleaner attachment, but with several buttons that pop out for more strength. Anything would work, as long as it can be secured (theft would be rampant I would think, especially of 15" displays).
"Yeah, I need FireWire 1600 and, uh, let's see...minimum 256MB graphics and, oh, let's see...can we have an octo-processor? And how about USB 3.0? USB 2.0 is for pussies and lightweights. I think Apple should take a shot at going back to the original iMac and offering a single model.
I agree. The concept of only having to choose your color was really something that kicked! It made life easier for Mr. & Ms. NoName because they didnt have to look at specs and see what the diffrence was!

Give me a break. Nobody is asking for this. But I'm glad to see you and HOM have your own mutual admiration society.
The gist of the thread is simply that the iMac isn't cutting it as a consumer machine. For the rich, maybe, but otherwise its too slow and too expensive. I know the rejoinder...what consumer needs more than 1Ghz for word processing and surfing the web. But that's not the issue... The issue is why is someone going to pay many hundreds of dollars more for a 1 Ghz iMac when they can buy a Dell or Compaq with a 2.4 P4?
Are "consumers" smart enough to know the difference? Absolutely...in the laptop arena, a 1 Ghz G4 processor is very competitive price/performance wise...and laptops have flown off the shelves. The G5 is very competitive price/performance wise against high end p4s, and they too have flown off the shelves.
The next gen iMac MUST have an expansion slot, even if 90% of people never use it. (The fact that you don't use something, like insurance, doesn't mean you don't want it.) The next gen iMac MUST have a better price/performance ratio. Right now, it sucks.
Ompus
(5 days for Steve to impress me, 6 days before I purchase 3 "consumer" computers).
Do I know you? Bug off. I don't even know HOM and I'm not sure what I appreciate, other than a suggestion of a modular iMac that can be used two ways. One post each about it. We weren't exactly engaging in a simultaneous, thread-long BJ session over it, so I don't know where that remark came from. Wow.
If you're indeed a porn-downloading gamer or Photoshop wannabe and I hit a bit close to home with my joking post (notice the quote marks, smileys, etc....dead giveaways), I extend my deepest apologies. Forgive me. It's called sarcasm and being silly. Relax. You'll enjoy your time here better.
And yes, after you've been around here a while, you'll discover that, yes, there ARE people basically asking for the stuff I write about jokingly.
In any case, I agree that it would be nice if the iMac were a little more focused and tight in the lineup, sporting some price-justifying muscle (or lowered in price to be a bit more reasonably priced for a "consumer machine"). At one time it was the end-all/be-all machine, and I think, for many reasons, its impact has slipped over the past few years. I'd LOVE to see it return to its glory days of 3 or so years ago, when, it seeemed, everybody wanted one and they sold like crazy. I'm sure Apple does too, so I'm betting they're hard at work on it, as we speak. But let's be reasonable about it: you can't have all these cutting edge specs and muscle and have it priced at $999 can you? If you know a way, get your resumé to Apple and help them out!
With the iMac and the display line-up both overdue for an upgrade it would seem that this might be an opportunity to find a way to design both to be complimentary.
If Apple insists on clinging to an AIO design, affix the arm to whatever chassis design Mr. Ives can come up with and hang the new display from it. This creates economy of production (and lower cost) because the monitors would all be the same. Just connect the one the customer wants to the new box (or hemisphere, or cube, or pyramid).
I've heard that the new displays support the VESA standard for attachment, so they could conceivably be hung from an Apple designed arm. ADC connector (or even DVI) could be built in to the arm so it would be simple to repair or replace or even upgrade.
My own choice would be to offer a headless low end, but bundling the displays (and appropriate arms) at attractive price points to offer the style conscious a complete package.
This headless version would imply dual display capabilities, so it's also a feature and value added. Buy in cheap with a headless version, then upgrade to an Apple display while keeping your old one.
This might also be a good time to add DVI connectors to the displays and be able to sell into the Wintel crowd directly. Apple may have learned something about playing to the whole market with the iTMS, we will know soon enough.
Of course keeping the clean lines of the displays means that Apple will need to offer something to hang them on, so a base/port would need to be offered, something to attach the adjustable arm to. Running USB2 and FireWire to this base would be nice, maybe even a PC Card port for handy transfer of digital photos. (and a multitude of other uses). Of course a cheap prop could be offered for the Wintel crowd, or offices that plan to hang them from a wall-mount.
Lest anyone think the iMac G4 always sucked (price : performance wise), that wasn't the case. When it was first announced, it was a much better value than the entry level Power Mac. But there was no stock for a couple of months, there was a $100 price bump, and there was the march of history. At this point, I consider the G4 dead on the desktop. The iMac needs desperately a decently clocked G5, as others have pointed out. It's bad enough that the LCD AIO design amounts to expensive, dead-end hardware. Right now Apple is adding insult to injury with an outmoded processor.
I think the iMac as it is now has lost it's identity, purpose, and role. I'm not even sure it's proper to call the iMac of today and iMac when it has deviated so much from the original.
The original iMac never really left us. They just came up with another computer (the current iMac) and stole the name of the original big hit. The current iMac is an imposter! Identity theif.
The eMac is the original iMac. And is more affordable/better priced than in the bondi blue/fruity days.
