I don't want a crippled video card in my Mac. I can't have the Titanium at educational price, so I'll be stuck with the MX for a while. Yeah, I can afford the machine anyway and wait to see a Mac Titanium in stores. But this is taking me the shit out. Damn!
Tigerwood, what about the noise of the dual ? Do you hear some hiss ?
Is the dual noisy ? How loud is it compared to the other Mac you had ?
(Ok, this isn't the thread subject so you can reply to me in private. [email protected])
Before my Dual GHz I had an 867. That thing was the loudest computer I have ever heard. Annoyed the hell out of me. The Dual GHz is surprisingly quiet compared to the 867, I am very happy with it.
I don't know about that. The computers at my skool are loud as f*ck. And the monitors give me a headache....I was on one and just couldn't stand it so I had to get off.
I have a Dual gig with Sony 21" trinitron, and yeah I get the flicker thing, but damn its not that big a deal really. People in here talkin like the monitor blows up or something. I don't plan on keepin this crappy MX and I never intended too. Apple should replace them with 7500's though. But this machine is sweet and to think I almost bought a dual 800 for $500 more a couple weeks earlier. The Ti's will be out soon, lets hope they don't have the same problem.
It's pretty minor I agree, but it's actually gotten worse and more annoying. I'd have little ones in the corner or wherever before and now I have them across the whole screen. It's just that they shouldn't have this problem & Apple should offer us some kind of compensation. I'd be willing to pay BTO $250 extra so I can replace it with a GF4 Ti from Apple, however they won't be available for another couple weeks. I will probably just get a Gainward or Asus or Visiontek Ti 4400 or 4600 and sell the GF4 MX to someone I know. He said he'll buy it & probably for at least $150.

I predict that it will become more and more of a problem, until the card fries the LCD monitor. A guy had this recently. So, nope, I wont buy that product.
Ok, I'm a pessimist. But nature always make it worst.
I too have seen 'the flash.' I don't know if it is a serious enough problem for me to trade up to the 8500, but I know that promotion runs out in a couple of weeks.
One question, does the 8500 have an ADC connection?
8500 Mac Edition does not have ADC; you would have to use the Apple ADC-DVI connector at $150 or a similar product from another manufacturer. It does, however, have dual-head VGA and DVI support.
Check out xlr8yourmac.com by the way if you're thinking about trying to flash PC versions of the 8500 to work on the Macintosh; you'll think again after reading the horror stories from people who have tried.
Still trying to decide whether to get an 8500 myself (Mac Edition, of course) or sell everything and go for one of the new PowerBooks and clear off some space on my desk.

I have the same problem on my 933 G4 with the GeForce 4 MX. It's really not that big of a deal. Every few hours, for a milli-second, a row of diagnol lines that take up about 1/4th of my screen (17" ASD) flash. No big deal at all. I've never noticed it showing up while playing games though (Alice and The Sims). The only complaint I have about the whole package is that it only comes with 256 MB of SDRAM. Hardly enought to run OS X. For $2,300 I think that Apple should put in a stick of 512 MB instead... <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
I just got off the phone with Apple's Education Support and they told me that Apple is aware of the problem and that they're working on a firmware update that should remedy the problem. If they don't have it out soon, there may be an exchange program they would run. I was surprised I would be told about the possible exchange program unless they were closer to that to fix the problem than they were for the firmware update.
Kali, I thought we agree you should get a PS2 or an x-box or both -- they've just been lowered to 199USD.
You're not likely to get the kind of game performance you want from a Powermac. At least not in the forseeable future. Not that it isn't adequate or that you could really notice the fps differences, but when you look at the framerates your PC playing friends get from their machines, you will feel jealous.
Am I missing something here, I got a apple update with new Nvdia drivers for the Geforce 4 MX, I updated and have not had the problem since. Why did I get an update and noone else got it? Check Apples download area because mine is fixed. I will look to see if I kept the updater. If I have it I will post a link for it.
The nVidia Driver Update 3.0 has nothing to do with the problem or fix, if that's what' you're referring to. That's only a fix for dual-monitor support in OS 9 with the addition of a Matrox card.

I am wondering which option I should go with. Maybe I can complain to Apple and they will give me a GF4 Ti 4600.
Just signed up the ATI Radeon 8500 trade up program. The card should be avail in a few days
Also. My Dual Athlon also has had a GeForce 4MX card installed for a few days to replace the GF 2MX card. Guess what? Same flashing problem!!!!!!!!
I just pulled it out and will return it tomorrow. And I will get a PC version of 8500 for it.
ATI all the way. nVidia, no way.

it's not a 'crippled' card, every few hours the screen flashes for a milisecond...
There is definately a tube in my PowerBook cos I've had it to bits. Are you saying the studio displays use something else?
