Latest Bush shocker...

According to this New York Daily News blurb, President Bush told New Yorker writer Ken Auletta:

"No President has ever done more for human rights than I have."

Shocking, yes. What he probably meant was "No President has lied so baldly and so often and so demonstrably."

Anyway, the article comes out tomorrow in the New Yorker. It examines the relationship between the Bush White House and the Press, which I think is a worthy topic to discuss along with this major gaffe.

Excellent. I hope that they send a copy of the article to Camp Delta so that those 600-odd men and children held there without charge or trial might be motivated to write their appreciation.

do you think it's due to efforts in afghanistan and iraq?

on paper he's brought democracy to two nations that have not had it. on paper. it's still to soon to tell, but frankly, i could see how he could make the case in his mind.

No, it's due solely to hubris. But I will allow for the possibility that he misspoke. Certainly, he meant he has done more to human rights than any other President...

andrew jackson would get my vote for that. don't forget roosevelt locking up japanese americans during WWII.

i just think in his mind he sees himself as the liberator of the middle east.

    obviously hubristically (?) fueled.

This is why we need a political subforum. I'm getting sick of all these substanceless propaganda threads being started. Am I the only one?

I disagree. While you may say this thread has little leg to stand on this is not what is killing AO. Its when people sidetrack threads and try to fit everything into political discussion. Its when a thread about Bush visit to Iraq suddenly discuss the reason to go into Iraq, Afghanistan, taxes, his daughters, pollution, Clinton, Dean, Clark, Blix, Turkeys (the bird) aso. And especially when it dereails into discussions of different members cognitive and moral means. THATS when I get sick of this forum.

Threads like this should die due to the lack of content of the first post (no offence Shawn) but instead they usually evolve into what I described above and THATS whats killing AO.

Did George Bush not claim, unequivocally, that "No President has ever done more for human rights than [he has]?"

I think that warrants discussion about just what human rights he has advanced as President. Don't you? Defend his statement, please!

Very little actual contradiction of his statement, oddly enough.

It's not a difficult claim to make.

That is not a lead-in for a substantive discussion of his statement.

He claims to have done as much or more than any other president with regard to human rights.

I really shouldn't have to explain how one would begin discussion, but since most of the politik-focused lemmings here have the attention span of a gnat, I'll start you off...

To contradict Bush's statement you need to take the following steps:

1 - Find a president who has done more with regard to human rights.

2 - Point out why (try your best to be fair).

    1. George Washington.

    2. He's in great part responsible for the Constitution and the Constitution has done more for Human Rights than all the rest of the presidents combined.

    Yeah, you're right.

But we should all figure out what exactly he's done first, then find a President who has done "more." The only thing is that his claim seems totally bogus even on the surface because it's so unequivocal. Surely his greatest human rights accomplishment isn't unequivocally *greater* than those of our past Presidents? How do you even compare that? We have Lincoln who freed the slaves, FDR who stopped a war, JFK who averted a thermonuclear war. It's a *very* difficult claim to make. Furthermore, the "totality," I guess, of Bush's human rights record seems appalling.
