So are they as common as is depicted in TV shows, or is it just a common plot device to introduce hijinx into the shows?

I don't know how common they are, but it is a good way to get fired for sexual harassment. I almost lost my job because of 1 lousy date. It's not worth the hassle or the bs.

At our work place, romances are rampant. Even I, a married IT geek, have been hit on .

C'mon, guest! With a juicey opener like that, you simply have to spill a little more than that!

The place where I work used to be romance central. I think the count was that 16 couples paired up while they worked in the office together. It apparently got so bad that an official announcement came down from the firm's owner/president/CEO/chairman that the intra-office dating had to stop. Then 2 weeks later, he announced his engagement to another woman in the office. It doesn't seem to happen around here as much since I've been here, but I know some people hooked up once they left the firm.

Also some married folks both end up taking jobs in the same place after a while, or start their own businesses together.

As for me? Let's just say I'm looking to change jobs.

It's very common. I worked in a hospital, and this is where i met my wife. You tend to meet people where you are the most part of your time.

since i just got through with the graduate school equivalent of a work place romance, i would say they are not worth the souring event. very not worth it.

Come to think of it two other guys I work with met their wives where they worked. One guy was a post doc and I think his wife a grad' student. The other guy was a grad' student and his wife a post doc. Now the really funny thing is that all four of them work here now. Three in my department and the other up stairs.

I have a good friend who is probably the world's leading expert on this.

Apparently it happens all the time and many many people meet their spouses at work.

I had a kind of workplace romance myself: I did my civilian service in an old people's home. After my service time had ended, I sometimes did help out with some night duty to earn a little extra. They made a summer party each year for all residents and employees. At one of these parties, I met a nurse. We're married now for nearly 9 years.

    Huh?

I've personally never had a workplace romance. But my department's secretary is really, really, hot. I'm married, but argh. She's very flirtatious too.

My lover is also my business partner.

Meetings on the conference table are...um...."productive" to say the least.

I had a steamy workplace romance at my first job out of college. Our romance was wonderful; but I found that it caused problems elsewhere. A few female "colleagues" were jealous that I had hooked up with the hottest 'single' guy at our site, and one proceeded to cause me serious back-stabbing type problems. Jealous females can be truly lethal in their spitefulness.
