Jealous females can be truly lethal in their spitefulness.
I don't mean this to sound like a chauvinist remark, but let's just say that I find this catty behavior among women to be surprisingly common.
I was at a bar with some friends, one of whom has a new girlfriend who joined us. A couple of our female barfly friends also showed up. While the guys all got along with all of the women and vice versa, at one point I was left as the only guy in front of these women. I could feel them all leering across the table, the two friends against the new girl and the girlfriend looking down her nose at the two barflies. There was no provocation, no real reason for this, no jealousies that I would be aware of, no history.
I can't say this is always true, most of my closer female friends don't act like this at all with other women. But it's like some women approach other women with a chip on their shoulder.
Granted, guys have the same attitude with other men too, especially if they have nice jobs, make more money or are taller. It's one thing to have a jealous streak, all guys have this instinct to some extent. (Yes, all of you do and you know it.) But some people are basically paranoid about people of the same sex.
I've personally never had a workplace romance. But my department's secretary is really, really, hot. I'm married, but argh. She's very flirtatious too.
I looked at the publication list and noticed Aguinis was a frequent coauthor. Just a guess.

....
I do too with all the same apologies. For all the rhetoric women spew out about supporting each other in the work place and creating an environment to BLAH BLAH BLAH. They ****ing go at each other.
.. so you are telling there are more applein/outsiders involved with each other??? (i wish everyone had 200 differnt ips where they post like me so thatd give enough headache to the curious mods..)
By where they are most of the time, i mean physically ...
Most of the women I had dated after college I met through work. However, I only went out with the temps. My buddy went out with one of the permanent employees, and after they broke up, it got ugly.
I think it happens often, but my advice is in general not to have serious relationships in the workplace. We've had sexual harassment suits, jealous tiffs (more interesting the covetous JPEGs) and hottub-induced divorces.

Hi Buon Rotto -
I don't think what you say is chauvinistic at all. I agree with you completely. In fact, I am hanging out on 'this' board (AO) because it's mostly guys, and I get along with guys SO much better than with some women - the catty ones. I hate all that catty stuff. I have no patience for it, and don't want to be around it. I came here from a gossiping, catty incident at another board. Yuck!
I think guys are so much more straightforward than females, and without so many hidden agendas. I have some great female friends, however; but none of them are catty, petty, destructive or toxic. They are more like.....guys!
The woman who was most jealous at my first job just couldn't compete. It must be terrible to be someone like her and have such rotten self-esteem, and so much envy.
Okay, let me ask you this. If you were travelling with a good male friend, and together you met a very attractive female at a bar, would there be a sense of competition between you over her? Would you 'jostle' for her favors, so to speak?
yeah, my wife has found in her career (architecture) that the women are a much bigger problem than the guys.
she'd be warned that men would try to keep her from excelling etc, but when she actually got into the work world, the guys have all been nothing but nice. (well, except for the occasional nice but leering morons)
the women on the other hand are a nightmare. some she knew from school, and they're fine. the other women it's like some kind of sorority house. all sorts of stupid games, snippy remarks, random crap like that.
she's found women have done a lot more to try and keep her from moving on and moving up than the men ever have.

[gasps] Why, I take offense to your reference to "cats"!!!
Just kidding!
Naw, I completely relate to your observations of catty women behavior. It even gives the "real" cats a bad name...

It's very common. I worked in a hospital, and this is where i met my wife. You tend to meet people where you are the most part of your time.
agreed - similar experience for me (although not at a hospital)
