Local Treats?

Are there any delicacies or "just plain tasty" foods peculiar to the place you live?

Take poutine, the (debatably) Québecois artery-clogger of French fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds. Delicious and disgusting all at once.

Beaver tails are great, too... sweet, crispy, paddle-shaped slabs of fried batter that make a great outdoor snack.

Huge fan of Tex-Mex myself. Amazing stuff, but I don't get enough of it being from Chicago and all.

There is an awesome Chinese place by where I live, love it, can't get enough of it.

This time of year the Iwegans around here love their lefse and lutefisk.

I don't mind the former, but that fish:

Grew up in Texas and LOVE TexMex. (I make some mean enchiladas myself.)

But as for local dishes, well moose tacos are quite the treat. Halibut in a rice wrapper with a soy-cilantro sauce--my mouth drools just thinking about it. And King salmon with a little lemon pepper and alder smoke fresh off the grill cannot be beat. But if you like lamb, Dale sheep is even better--tender and way less fat.

There is a small privately owned Chinese restaurant an hour from my house that makes the best Orange Chicken man has ever created.

I think the question was asking if there are dishes that are unusual to your REGION. Everybody's got a favorite Chinese restaurant dish!! (I sure do)

I've had Orange Chicken at many Chinese Restaurants in many areas, and nothing comes within a mile of this one. It is definitely unique.

Hi Groverat - What 'is' Tex-Mex, exactly?

I mean, does if differ from 'Mexican food', like enchiladas, tacos, etc. ?

I LOVED Alaskan Gold beer, that I drank in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Do they send it to the lower 48 at all?

(Of course, the Europeans would think it was pond water, like all American beer. )
