Does Apple actually read these new crash reports?

Every time one of my apps unexpectedly quits - and it happens at least 3 times a day, from iTunes to Safari to Illustrator - the report window appears and I dutifully fill in what was happening at the time.

Is anyone actually looking at this or am I wasting my time?

If it's anything like the Safari bug reports, probably not. They're probably run through a filtering tool that yanks the important information out of the crash trace itself. Then, if something piques their curiosity about a certain set of reports, they may read over the details you fill in.

So, no, you're not entirely wasting your time. It's good to put in a few details, but you don't need to type out pages of information for them.

all sorts of things quit on me. Illustrator does it a lot, even iTunes does it often - and I only recently did a clean re-install of Panther. Internet Explorer and Safari are other big quitters.

I've always had problems with this computer - Dual 1.42 G4 with 1.5bg ram.

This sounds like a hardware problem, frankly. Have you tried swapping out a stick of RAM at a time? RAM can go bad over the course of time, and when it does you're in crash city.

I've had applications run literally for weeks, including iTunes and Safari.

when i first got the machine I had a lot of trouble - I took the 'free' ram that macmall gave me out and installed Crucial rma, and things settled down. But I still get sporadic problems. Not every day with each app, but usually 2-3 quits a day. Seems to depend how hard i push the machine (I'm a heavy graphics/video user)

There's trailer for a new Pixar short called "Boundin;" on their site. After watching it I attempted to download the trailer for "The Incredibles", the next feature film due in 2005. It crashed.

Check your fonts. I had the same problem: after quitting some fonts it went away.

The only app that crashes on me sorta constantly is AOL. I have to use it because a lot of friends still use AOL and want me in chat rooms, so I use it. I hate it though. I hope they make it more ready for Panther!

Safari, sometimes, though not too often, crashes on me. Other than that, OS X is pretty rock solid on my 15" AlBook and my dual G5.

All my Macs crash more frequently post Panther. Panther has some nice things but stability has definetly taken a down turn. Every twain device I have no longer works with native drivers since ugrading.

AOL crashes about 3 times a night on me using 10.3.2

It almost never crashed in OS9.

    Very frustrating indeed.

Let me ask you-do you have problems downloading jpg's and mpg's to your computer while on AOL? It just wont download properly for me, only if I use an external browser.

JPGs download ok for me. I do most of my browsing by choice outside of AOL because AOL doesn't have a popup blocker and other little things.

I use safari and camino. When OmniWeb 5 comes out next month, I think I will be spending some time with that great looking browser.

Opera is lagging badly in performance and standards support.

IE is... well, it just sucks in my opinion.

OmniWeb 5 is based on the same rendering engine as Safari, with Omnigroup's patented(*) UI wizardry and geeky goodness. That way you get Safari's level of standards support (which is excellent), coupled with OG's UI expertise (which is excellent). I'm excited about this one. It's currently in beta, full release due in a few weeks.

Camino/Firebird/Mozilla are all based off the same code, with UI differences. I've used all three from time to time, haven't really felt comfy with any of them on the UI level. Not bad though, and good to have around.

    * No, not actually patented, but it darned well should be. These guys are great.

thank GOD that someone finally mentioned this as a solution. i mean, i'm not saying you are like this, but you have no idea how many people i will talk to bad mouth the os, and when i crack open their fonts folders (or wherever they activate from), i find tons of fonts they have accumulated from all sorts of places, or have never kept a clean copy, in case they should get corrupted.

seriously, folks, fonts are like the oil in your car -- you have to have a little, sometimes you need to replace it, and you can't just put ANYthing down that hole and expect your car to run right. i mean, how do you think you're reading this post right now? that's right... FONTS.
