there are at least a few users who are still OS 8 yet post here, too.
any 7 ?
<rummages for thread on "oldest mac to access ai>
I run 8.6 and 7.5.5. 8.6 on a iMac (333Mhz rev.D) And 7.5.5 on a LC** and LC520.
**And about that Oldest Mac on AI thread... My LC just died -- well the video went (at first I thought it was the DB25-to-VGA unit but I was mistaken, the video on the board went... --RIP--)
Well, after using OS X since its introduction, I booted up my old 3400 today just for kicks...and I actually had to stop and think about how to get certain tasks accomplished. Good riddance.
I mean, come on, no "check spelling as you type" option?
I am a home user, (Mac 8500 and eMac), retired 3 years ago from an office which switched 10 years ago from Macs to Wintel - so I have used both. I still prefer the Mac and visit 2 or 3 Mac forums fairly regularly.
Slowly I have come to the conclusion that most Mac forum visitors are power/business users. The cost of updates falls on the shoulders of their business. My situation is different. I must pay for all updates out of my own pocket.
BTW, I believe that the large preponderance of OS X in the poll may arise from the fact that home users are under-represented in your population.
IMHO people like me need only modest computing power, for WP, Internet browsing, occasional number crunching, etc. For us, a large amount of today's hardware and software is overkill. Many of us have used the clever stuff in an office environment but do not need it now. I, for one, get irritated by the, for me , unnecessary complexity of most systems.
A person working from home is rather isolated. She/he lacks the opportunity to discuss problems with coworkers or fellow students. We are therefore particularly grateful for the existence of the Mac community foums.
When I post on a forum I invariably receive courteous and helpful replies but they sometimes come from respondents who appear to inhabit a different working environment. When I plead for a simpler hardware/software experience I receive some sympathy but am left with the impression that the market of which I am a part is of little commercial interest. Respondents are too polite to say it, but I feel that what many are saying is "Get used to it".
Can anybody recommend a forum sympathetic to those who feel that the personal computer experience needs a fundamental re-think?
I think the only place you'll find a Mac board without a majority of Mac OS X users is one designed specifically for Mac OS 9 itself or old software in general.
That's true. Posterboy may want to cruise the MacFixit forums, which have had a strong OS 9-user presence in the past. (I haven't been there in a long time.)
And then there's that near-militant pro-OS 9/anti-OS X site out there. Though I came across it a few weeks ago, I don't have a link to share as I couldn't dredge it up with a Google search...all perhaps for the better.

Why do I keep to OS 9 when I have OS X available?
