*LAUGH* I gave a talk last October at ASE'03 and my advisor actually suggested I change a hyphen in the title to a colon. "Why?" "It's just what's done..."

Heh. My dissertation director INSISTED that I NOT have a colon in my title. In addition, I just had an article published in Nov, and early on in the editorial process (which began, believe it or not, in 1998 ), they sent me a sheet of instructions. One of them was NO COLONS IN THE TITLES.
I've been working hard since then to get out of that habit. It really is silly. I mean, come on. Is there really any reason to title something "When I Fall Upon The Sidewalks of Life, I Skin My Knees. I Bleed": Reinventing The Tradition in the Poetry of Billy Collins"* when "Reinventing the tradition in the poetry of Billy Collins" will work just fine? I don't think I've had a colon in a title since then.
Cheers

* I just made that title up. The quote is from memory. Billy Collins in the US poet laureate, and if you've never read him, you should.
