Yeah, my first computing experience was on a mac, thankfully. Apple II. I remember watching Wargames, and loving that computer, (I have the DVD now.) Windows 95 is the earliest I went back on a PC. It is quite amazing how far things have come in just twenty years. Anyway, speaking of the Apple commercial, I can't wait to see the Pepsi/iTunes promo. on the Superbowl.

An Apple II is not a Mac. Remember, The Macintosh is 20 years old, but Apple is pushing 30.

it was THE commercial that turned the super bowl into an advertising showcase.

the NFL has become lackluster in the 20 years since but networks keep upping the ante to cover football just to get a taste of the super bowl pie.

it's a guaranteed revenue bonanza, even when it gets crappy ratings.

    tribune story about the ad

    Quote:

The commercial, directed by Ridley Scott of "Thelma and Louise" and "Gladiator" fame, was a direct attack on rival IBM and was dramatically successful. Apple sold 72,000 Macintoshes in the first 100 days after it ran. As Advertising Age wrote in naming "1984" the commercial of the decade six years later, the ad "created a new genre of commercials--advertising as an event--and transformed the Super Bowl telecast into a venue of choice for campaign launches."

Except that in 1984, everybody knew him as Ridley Scott of "Alien" and "Blade Runner"

much stronger geek mojo, and who better to craft dystopian tech worlds

Prof. James Twitchell's new book "20 ads that shook the world:

the century's most groundbreaking advertising and how it changed us all"

spends 10 pages on 1984 under the heading "the ad as artifact".

I leafed through it the other day and plan to pick up a copy for future teaching.

Just saw the movie "1984". That makes the commercial more understandable. Also, one word to describe the movie...CREEPY.

There's nothing at all odd about the choice.

He was talking about England in 1948, using an imagined world to amplify his point (in the tradition of Twain, Swift, et. al.).

1984 is a great book. Highly recommended, and relevant at all times.
