Why did so many Republicans vote for Kerry in NH?

I'm confused. How would Kerry appeal over Clark. Clark is a freakin Republican. Kerry is from NEW ENGLAND. He is a Massachusetts Dem, how much more liberal can you get unless you're from VT and you're Howard Dean.
