What started out as a simple snippet from Apple Australia, with the slimmest of bearing on possible G5 updates, has become a discussion somewhat bigger than I imagined.
It suggestes to me that no one has any idea as to when updates might happen.
The only thing we know is that there will be an update.
AppleInsider finally shed some light on the subject...
According to today's post IBM has recently sent the first batch of 970fx chips to apple. Awesome... now the real question, are they for the consumer or for the government. Could Apple turn out to be a very ironic company and supply the government with some of the fastest processors in the world and give them a way to succeed like 1984
I couldn't help myself. Any ways... Macosrumors.com (*cough* never knows whats going on *cough*) claims they will be out shortly after 10.3.3 is released. AppleInsider.com claims they will be out soon as Apple gets enough procs. The IEEE convention next week will shed more light on the 970fx's true performance... could that be the day they are released?
There currently isn't ANY refurbished g5's available on Apple's website!!!
This is the first time I've seen this since the g5's have been released. They must be some incredible machines that they *never* get refurbished... j/k, or perhaps Apple is finally cleared enough inventory to release the rest of the refurbed g5's to resellers... we can only hope.
By the end of february, I would expect PMG5 update
the reason : the yesterday article regarding 90nm SOC produced by IBM for Apple has been removed from the web site!!!!!!!!!
guess who was asking for that action.........
so it confirms that updates will be here soon.
In addition, french mac rumors web site croquer.free.fr, which was the first to report PPC970 derivates (dual core, ...) reports that Apple ahs received PPC975 from IBM, those one will replace the PPC970fx found in the G5 xServe and in the next revision of PMG5.
PPC970fx was ready since a long time, but the ain reason why Apple could not deliver it is related to FSB and chipset frequency. Only the one announced yesterday will allow Aplle to install a PPC970fx running 2.5GHz (so a FSB at 1.25GHz), this chipset should allow a max FSB of 1.4GHz, so a PPC970fx at max 2.8GHz.
This chipset and PPC970fx will also find its way to the PowerBook, here more for heat release and power-consuming reason, than max performance.
Now, is Apple waiting for PPC975 for PMG5 update, or we will have PPC970fx in the PMG5 revision, I think this more important question...
PPC975 is reported currently at basal speed 2.8GHz, with current max at 3.4GHz (some at 4GHz in IBM labs).
PPC975 is based on Power5 architecture.
PPC976 will be the dual-core version of the PPC975
My prediction :
End of Feb : update of PMG5 with PPC970fx
WWDC : PowerBook G5 using PPC970fx
MacWorld July : new PMG5 update (Pro line?) including the new PPC975, available in September
let's wait and see
A post by 'Eric' over at at Macrumors. Last page of one of those PowerMac at 2.5? threads...
Has Apple ever released a computer on his b-day? I feel like these are the most anticipated computers ever. I haven't ever seen such a large group of people looking forward to a release. The g5 was great but the improved g5 will bring the unfaithful over.
Only reason I didn't buy a Rev A is because I didn't trust the hardware. Its brand new in so many ways and I just wanted to be sure before I spent my money on a high end machine.
Either way... I'll be buying one when / if they come out... who knows apple might blow up in the next few days...then no new g5s . All that wait for nothing .
Please don't blow up before the new g5s apple... I swear I'll be a better person... I can't be on this XP machine any more
I'm new here guys, so pardon the intial intrusion... I've been reading up the rumors about apple's rev b to the power mac line that's supposedly should have been here since the end of Jan (haha). I'm a professional artist and I'm going to make the switch as soon as they revamp the powermac line. Through what I've read it's sounding more and more like an end of March event. To be competive and maintain a solid market prescene apple has to keep it's products updated. The thought of 3ghz machines being avaible in next revision is a bit far fetched. A jump that far wouldnt be necessary right now for apple to make, especially Jobs said it was coming at the end of this summer. It wouldnt be a smart marketing move. What we should expect though is a slight bump, nothing too significant because the 3 ghz mark is going to be a big deal for apple. They've been stuck below 2ghz for years while intel and amd have climbed past it. They know how big of a deal this is going to be, and they're not going to climb too high right now in their processor speeds, it just wouldnt be a smart move. If we're REALLY lucky we might see 2.6, but i dont think we should get our hopes up. 2.4 is a much more likely top speed right now with what's been said of the current technology (which if i've been understanding this correctly..is limiting the frontside bus to a speed that wouldn't be be a 2:1 ration for a 2.6 OR a 2.4 machine). That being said, it wouldnt be smart for apple to make that jump because the performance wouldnt be as significant between the models. Either way, as soon as those rev b's hit the shelves i'm snatching one up. I can't live in this PC world anymore. My rear end has grown sore from years of microsoft.

If Apple really wants bang for it's buck, It would not release a small speed bump in the rev B. They should come out with a 3.0 in this release. That way, they won't have people going, "I can wait for the Rev c". This would send a shock wave throughout the computing world. I think an all dual line of 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 would do the trick and use the slower chips to power all the other lines they can cram the chips into. Apple needs to make a big splash and not another little drip.
Then why are the Apple stores recieving EOL's on the G5 models right now? I don't know. It would be a huge deal, but I dont think there's anyway that Apple is going to have that line you said ready in the typical 6 month window for hardware updates, and to not keep the products updated is bad business and Apple knows that. Do you think rather than a speed increase that large, maybe we'll see a very small increase (maybe just to 2.2, then to 2.4 if we're lucky this time around)? Maybe we'll see a change in the chipe architechter (90nm anyone)? I don't know. They have to do something to the professional line in terms of an update within the next few months. I would like to think it's up to 3ghz already, but i think if they were to make that jump it's not going to come when they SHOULD make an update. You are right though, why would people buy now if they have to wait for rev C to get the promised 3 ghz? That's the thorn in our sides really... Steve-o making such an announcement. I'm surprised he's sold many rev A's after making that announcment at MWSF when all those people knew 3ghz was coming in a year. Either way, i think it's just supplying a demand for machines. A lot of people dont need 3ghz (a lot of people WANT 3ghz). Maybe then we'll just see a more efficient chip architechture to test out the 90nm chips. Maybe the rev b's will the guinea pigs to see how the 90's function in preparation for the rev c's. WHO KNOWS!? I'm getting blue in the face speculating over here!
Processor companies squeeze all the money out of consumers they possibly can. Take Intel for example, They sell faster chips clocked down at slower rates (2ghz clocked to 1.8ghz) so they can simply get all the money they possibly can. They are not going to sell 100,000 2ghz chips and no 1.8ghz chips. Don't you think it'd be more feasible to sell 80,000 2ghz chips and 80,000 1.8ghz chips? (of course these numbers are fake but it illustrates my point).
Apple isn't going to jump straight to 3ghz from 2ghz. There is way too much money to be made in between the chips. This is another reason they have such small updates on lines like the powerbook line. Its all about Supply & Demand.
I don't expect dual 2.6... No one has mentioned dual 2.5 or 2.4... One of those 3 will be the jump for the Rev Bs. Get the 3ghz idea out of your heads... no one will make that kind of a jump.
Someone had the balls to post that IBM is shipping a 2.5!! Damn it I've been telling everyone forever... MOSR doesn't know what they are talking about...they are the ones that started all of this 2.6 bs.

If the IBM 970FX is being used in xServers, this can't be the first batch. according to this post.
20th Anniversary of the Mac--Who cares! 49th Anniversary of Steve!!! PowerMacs indeed.
That would be irony at its most!

Ah, but did you read about the new info today?
A few weeks sooner than the end of March I think!

Has this been "Confirmed"? I read this on MOSR a week or so ago, but hadn't heard "Confirmation" of the EOL notifications yet.
Thanks!
