The Hives, the Vines, the stripes? Ring a bell?

...? Yeah, they were huge in 2003. On top of the charts.

    The Outkast. The Justin Timberlake.

The White Stripes performance was AWSOME. I think Rolling Stone magazine ranked Jack White #25 on their list of top 100 guitarists of all time. Last nights performance clearly catapulted him into the top 5.

I was reading who won in the paper today, and how could White Stripe not win best album of the year??? They were by far the most inovative of all the nominees, with real creativity. Na some buggos crap like outcast "my baby don't mess around blah blah" I mean what the ****. I retarded turtle could fart a better song.

No offense, but nothing is worse than watching a bunch of white stiffs pretending to be cool. White America has no culture. It is dead - actually it is Toby Keath but that is even worse!

All the awards shows suck. "Popular" music is just bs. People are force fed stuff by the record companies over the radio. Just baffles me how bands like Coldplay and White Stripes are apparently hot items right now but related stuff never sees the light of day.

People who like Coldplay would surely find interest in bands like Doves, Twilight Singers, and The Stills, but do we ever hear about those groups in the media? No.

People who like White Stripes would probably enjoy stuff like the Strokes, and the multitude of other not-so-big garage sounding acts out there. Bah.

But ya know the thing that irks me the most about award shows...

Is how they all seem to think by their playing on tv or accepting some award it's suddenly their political soapbox. Like I ****ing care what their polictics are, shut the hell up and play music. If I want to hear political rhetoric I'll go post some flame bait on Appleoutsider. :P

I don't know which is funnier, you people proclaiming your hate for pop acts like outkast or timberlake, or you people justifying why other equally void pop acts aren't as bad.

That's rather shortsighted. The arts have long been a means to convey political agenda. Poetry, visual art, music, theater, sculpture...etc. all these things have a long history of being vessels to carry political messages and propaganda, it's not like it's a new or recent thing.

I agree that some people take it too far, or apply it when it needs not be applied, but honestly, why care so much? were you really so offended?

want to know how to cure the grammies? simple. stop making it an annual event. award it whenever something truly innovative occurs. "and ***such-and-such band*** has been awarded an "outstanding album" award for their work on..."

and have the guts to say "you know, there wasn't an album this year in pop worth the plastic it was burned into. see you next year!"

Yes. Because they ruin it for me. I'll like a band, then they get up and spout some liberal agenda (even though they aren't even FROM the US), as though all their fans magically agree with them. It's annoying to me. Same thing with all the actors who do it, shut the hell up and accept your award, don't preach your political beliefs to me. I guess it boils down to respect for other peoples beliefs. If its some band like Manic Street Preachers who's songs are all about politico social issues then I'd expect it. It's when it just comes out for no good reason other than "hey look at me I'm a liberal" that it annoys me I guess. Call it a pet peeve :P

go into itunes and look at the billboard charts from past years, and you'll see how they have gone from containing real musicians to just hip-hop and rap artists. granted, there are some exceptions, but this explains why the grammy's were so pop-oriented.

for the record, i thought the performances were just "ok." beyoncé butchered her 'dangerous in love' song at the end with too much vibrato (for you musicians). i must say though, the performance near the beginning with dave matthews (and i forget who else--shame on me) was pretty cool. and you know, 99% of the music and artists i like werent even included in nominations, etc, so oh well....

Some pet peeve, But I see your point, If I heard a really bumping track then told it was produced by baby-eating nazis or something I'd be a little weirded out too.

but I dunno, extreme examples suck.

But ultimately, I try to not let people's spew get in the way of their music, a dope track is a dope track, it's just that simple.

I think people spend too much effort avoiding music sometimes.

I agree on Alicia Keys. I saw her do a piano solo performance on Carson Daly's late night show (don't ask, shut up). She. Was. Amazing.

I bought her debut CD within the week (back when I bought CDs). And was I ever disappointed. It was so overproduced and overlayered with conventional hip-hop elements. I just wanted to hear what I heard on that show, her and her piano. Had she done an acoustic album, it would have done phenomenally.

Here are other performers I'd like to see bare their breast(s) so they are shamed by Americans' incredibly low threshold for naughty bits and consequently are forced to appear less on screen:

    Britney

    Christina

    Shania

    Jessica Simpson

    Janet (check)

    Michael ()

    Screed

Hey i think you can check-mark Christina as well..

If only that effort was instead spent on avoiding annoying trends in slang, the world would be a better place.
