I have lived in Europe, but am in the US now. The three things I mentioned all happened in Chicago actually, but I've had a few run-ins with guns overseas as well.
Once was on a train from Bulgaria to Romania, where a boarder guard checking passports on the train threatened me with his gun. Another was in India, when I was in the lobby of my hotel in Agra. Some mobsters came in and started attacking two people in the hotel. Then they started threatening/questioning those of us who were there to see if we knew either of the two guys the mobsters were in the process of killing. I didn't. Anyway, ultimately one of the mobsters pulled a gun out and dragged one of the two now dearly departed down one of the hallways and the other was dragged into the trunk of their car and taken away.
Since I've spent more time in the states I guess you could say I've had more run-ins with guns while overseas.
Carol A, I'm referring to the recently signed US-Australian Free Trade Agreement. It contains such gems as criminalising copyright violations and "circumvention" devices, allowing copyright owners to subpoena ISPs, removing local content quotas on free-to-air television, handing control of the PBS (gives aussies cheap medicine) to drug companies (no more cheap medicine), restricts the marketing of generic drugs...
Basically, tariffs and quotas in Australia are negligable... something like an average of half a percent tariffs, and no quotas. So to get partial free trade from the US we had to find something else to trade. It turned out to be all our intellectual property laws, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and local content rules.

That's what you get for being George W.'s good friend. Lucky you.

And not once, but twice.
Yes indeedy! But don't stop at 1914.
Nothing like a few thousand years of bloodshed and invading armies to make you think twice before you leap.
