How is AI perceived by the rest of the mac community?

Like forum to forum, what do the denizens of macnn.com or spymac.com generally think of us?

personally, I think this is the best mac-centric forum on the web, but I wonder what we come of as to others.

After a (not so) careful evaluation, I have decided that AI is by far the best of the Mac forums out there. We look the best (thanks to Brad for keeping this place mostly color and completely avatar free, it truly looks the best). We have the best people here. Sometimes they get into spittin' matches, but things are all resolved soon enough and we're one big happy family again.

I love this place. Keep up the good work ya'll.

SpyMac is based out of New York's Empire State Building, by possibly a large construction firm, it has that "New York City" feel of the heavy black and white. They brag they got a 42 Rack of X-Serves and bandwidth to burn, thus why they give free .Mac type stuff away. God awful merchandise that they plan to make a profit from as well as hosting and ads. Not many takers. I think they are going to burn out, grabbed the AppleCollection website and made it part of their SpyMac Network.

I find SpyMac a cold, childish and out of control, they got pr0n section, which I frown on since SpyMac attracts a lot of younger persons.

Of course their Folding@home team is in sad shape. I think Spymac is just a hangout for kids at school, a lot don't even have a Mac.

MacRumors in my opinion is sort in the middle, does a lot of different things not all of them well, except the rumors maybe, which anyone can do, getting hard inside info, I haven't seen them do yet.

My opinion of AI is it contains more experienced, more mature folks, less tolerant and not quite as freewheeling as some other sites. Having been scolded here more than anywhere else : ) The grey color and the web layout gives it that more mature image.

Ok you can flame me now... : )

What do they think of us? That we are a "Cabal of Thieves".

I sense a bit of a theme here wobot. What do AO-ers think of each other? What do other forums think of AI?

Anyway, why don't you scoot off to one of the others you're not registered with, register and ask them. You could say you've registered at the other forum 'cause you really liked it (butter 'em up first) but you thought AI looked interesting too. What do they all think of AI? Hey you could pretend to be a Mac newbie too.

Then come back and tell us what they said. Could be fun.

Who cares how others view us!

Hell, what would you do if you found out that we are not well percived by other forums? Would you jump ship?

AI is a forum, some like it more than others, some don't. It is to each his own.

That article comes from before "the great blackout". Before my time, way before your time. Back in the days of the turquoise and black. Back in the days of workerbee. Dark times, dark times indeed.

Yeah, that's when AI really was a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

nah, well, compared to how it is now...yes.

    I was a lurker then, I didn't dare post.

wow, have I really been with this page so long...

Pester? That's the best threat they could come up with? Not even flame? What a bunch of wusses. Bet everybody was shaking in their boots at the thought of being "pestered".

I never really lurked here. I found AI one night when I was surfing, checked it out and signed up on the spot. I've been going strong since August 17th 2003. Wow...I have a lotta posts for only being around 7 months, but it's been a great 7 months. I look foreword to the time when I can tell newbies that I've been here too long, haha. Now all we need is a scandal to identify ourselves and bewilder the newbies. I think the applenut and Jonathan thing will work for that.

    Edit: I can't spell.

I didn't think it would take long for this thread to become "how do we perceive the rest of the Mac community." Heh.

Try not to bash, though. Everyone has their peculiar reasons to be where they are.

I have some sense of what people think of AI: It's usually a sort of Victorian "oooh, rumors, that's so low - what are they saying?" Fine. Whatever. I like the community here, warts and idiosyncracies and all. If I thought another forum was better, I'd be there.

Would it be a fair assessment that AI folks are not as "geeky" as other sites?

I mean we're spec whores to some degree (some more than others), but I find the discussions here for the most part, are more about solutions rather than pure numbers.

And while there are youths present here, everything seems to be far more civil than say, MacNN.

    My 2 cents.

I'm not sure. I'm guessing a casual observer might stumble across AppleOutsider and be tempted to slit his/her wrists after reading a few "choice" threads. Being an election year and all, the AO Brain Trust will, no doubt, be in full-tilt Obnoxio? mode. Even more than usual. Condescending, rude and ill-mannered know-it-alls, gasbags and malcontents. And people wonder why I removed myself...

    But I digress...

I do think our General Discussion, OS X, Genius Bar and Digital Hub forums are second to none.

I've pretty much cruised them all and I like this place the best. Like amorph said, if I found a place I liked better, I wouldn't be here.

I think we're seen as a semi-respectable, decent site. For every obnoxious wingnut, we have 2-3 smart, articulate and well-informed types to offset it.

It ain't no MOSR is what I'm trying to say. So we've got THAT going for us.
