    I agree that US is not uniform. I did not visited all the states of US, but sufficiently to see differences.



    You are right to say it's a question of familiarity. A european should find that a chinese looks like a japanese, but for an asiatic people he should have a different advice.



    I will just say that in term of unity US is 100 years away from EU.

    As far as I understand, the banning of veils/headscarves in public institutions (i.e., universities) has been the practice in Turkey for quite some time, and Muslim women in that country just deal with it. It was even the official policy in Iran for a short time (under Reza Shah Pahlavi around the 1930s) following the example of Turkey. Mandatory veiling was not enforced until 1982 and was optional for over 40 years previous to that year.



    As far as I have read, the change did not come from terrorist activity within the country. (In fact, the forced unveiling might be said to have terrorized Muslims.)



    That's a long way of saying that it sounds like an excuse rather than a justification.
