Can they equivocate this really? Does the murder of 6 million Jews hold the same weight as the slaughter of millions of animals?

    It just a marketing techique.

On the other hand humans need to address the ethics of factory farming, and do it in a big hurry. Factory farming is hideously cruel---I will not buy factory farmed meat.

Actually, their commercial that has the "they came for us in the night" audio is pretty good. I'd have no problem with it if they just kept it to that. Not really a super direct holocaust connection, but it's there. I think that would be "shocking" enough.

But to actually compare it to the holocaust? Give me a break. Showing pictures of large groups of animals on one side, Jews on the other... brutal. I think they're going for publicity, and don't give a rat's ass if it's positive or negative. You think they're really thinking "oh yeah, people are going to totally back this!"? They know it's shit, but they're all out there with shovels, grinning ear to ear.

Welcome to the world of activism. Most groups are like this, whether they're the KKK or PETA... they're just trying to get *themselves* in the spotlight, whatever the cause du jour.

    Imbeciles.

Worst marketing ever. I'm all about not being cruel to animals just for the sake of being cruel, but there is no way that the life of an animal holds the same weight as as the life of a human. That's just stupid.

    PETA sucks.

Agreed. Their publicity antics have been stupid before, but this is asinine.

Can't wait to hear what the ADL has to say about it.

The idea is to push the public discourse as far as possible to one side so the center point of compromise is more favorable.

Sooooo, the entire point of activism is to be an asshole, instead of producing rational, solid arguments and positions?

There's no discourse here, just an asinine comparison.

    I guess they're successful activists.

However, all they've done in my book is put themselves firmly in the "Cranks - Ignore" column, along with the other tinfoil hat people.

    Not activism. PETA.

For example, it's hard to say the Love Canal activists were irrational assholes.

OTOH, take a look at the anti-nuke idjits around Three Mile Island recently. Zero basis in fact, but badamn if they don't make good soundbites.

*Most* activists in my opinion are just media whores. There are a very few that have good solid reasons, and present them well without veering off into tinfoil hat land. But of course they get drowned out by the "Lookitme! Lookitme!" morons.

I think most of these causes would be better served if the loudest factions were to get the hell out of the way.

I can't tell if it's most, but I often put forward the same criticism. But there are a whole lot of groups and lobbyists that we don't hear about in the media. The media whores will drown them out by virtue of the fact that they are media whores.

I don't know. PETA is pretty effective.

Effective at making themselves looking like overblown morons? Ayup.

Frankly, all they've done is make me want to eat more meat just to piss them off.

No kidding. Everybody in this country is a media whore. Everybody wants 15 minutes of fame. If you own a biz, you need publicity. If you're an entrepreneur, an artist,a politician, an athlete etc etc.

Any publicity is good publicity. Isn't that the American way? The only reason these people resort to ridiculous stunts like that is because that's the only way they'll get any publicity. I agree we could do without extremists...everywhere, unfortunately "good causes" by themselves, don't get airtime.

I took this quotation from somewhere on the Net, lost the link.

"The United Nations Development Program estimates that the basic health and nutrition needs of the world's poorest people could be met for an additional $13 billion a year. Animal lovers in the United States and Europe spend more than that on pet food each year."

The underlying issue here is the value of using the "Holocaust" to describe other things. On the way home from classes every day, I see the following graffiti scrawled on a concrete bridge: Abortion is Holocaust. For some pro-life advocates who believe there is no distinction between the life of a human and the life of a human fetus, the continued legality of abortion is like the Holocaust. PETA feels the same way about the treatment of animals. Now, I don't share either view as an ardent pro-choice advocate and an admittedly happy omnivore. Regardless, I think I believe that the Holocaust is uniquely unique- therefore all comparisons are invalid. I generally support PETA, but I agree that this campaign will hardly win more support...

PETA is a disgrace. They give legitimate animal rights activists a bad name, as all the opposing camps group them together when spinning their PR,
