FYI, Mr. Not-so-well-cultured: Apple as an organization is considered a plural noun in languages outside of the USA. The phrase "Apple are innovating" is grammatically correct in British English.
And now, back to your regularly-scheduled discussion...
Gosh, what a bunch of fanboys. Wouldn't feel differently if the same device was white and featured on apple.com, would you? Props to Sony for innovating, or at least attempting to.
Innovating? We've had handheld video players/displays for at least 20 years.
Thing is... very few people want to watch stuff on a tiny screen. If they do, there are plenty of options.

Sony loves to make things just for sense of being "innovative", whether it makes any sense or not. That's one of the reasons things have been a little rocky for them as of late-- while they were refining their mini-discs and memory sticks and e-books and digital 8 camcorders people like Apple were coming up with the iPod and Canon, Samsung, et al were improving their mainstream offerings.
To me, this looks almost perfectly the wrong size-- too big to be something you slip and your pocket, too small to provide decent viewing.
As far as the video out goes-- why aren't I just burning a DVD again? Cause odds are that that "friend" that I'm so excited about sharing video with has a DVD player ready to go, whereas my groovy video pod is going to require hook up. And if I maxed out the storage by using anything but mpeg 2, it's going to look fairly bad on that plasma screen.
To the guy who is using his iPod to move dailys back and forth: congratulations, you have a portable hard drive. An excellent way to move video files around, but absolutely not requiring the trappings of a "pod-thing", which just adds size, weight and expense for the dubious pleasure of looking at stuff on that 3.5" screen.
I believe in Canadian English (.....we like to be special) the phrasing would be "Apple is Innovating" or "Microsoft is evil". Perhaps it's just me but that's how I recall being taught. Maybe it's a UK thing?
And don't pull that US+Canada=US stuff on me!
Well this certainly went off topic, so I better throw in a on topic comment:
That thing is ugly. Apple shouldn't make all iPods video if they make any. Just make a new high end line of iPod AVs. Think of the possibilities! just like eMac--->iMac---->PowerMac
I don't think we'll see a vPod anytime soon, but I think there are other reasons to have video on a small screen than watching movies.
I agree, no one wants to watch complete films, but there are lots of other clips I can think of that I'd want to watch. Music videos, talking head news clips, sports clips. But think wifi integration, and then these small clips make sense. What if your vPod would detect hotspots, and much like a RSS feed, automatically download all your current media clips. You could obviously manually add clips as well, much like iTunes now.
Also, I'm not expert on the tech specs, but it seems that if firewire starts becoming a standard on TVs, then having a movie on your vPod would be cool. Not to mention all those projector rumors...

all your English are belong to England !
Why is it so hard to grasp that English came from the English and therefore, when in dispute, one had better call upon their grammar rules in stead of yours ?
"a UK thing"
you lot took the English language and gave your own little twist to it. That's fine but don't laugh at someone you think "talks funny"
'cos trust me: Y'all are the ones talking funny now ain't yas Billy Bob?
Actually this (see link) is closer to what I thought a video ipod might be. Not so much for watching video from the unit's small screen, but capturing video, photos, playback of video (signal out), mp3's, etc. looks like a digital lifestyle device to me. Granted nowhere near the capacity of the ipod, but with a microdrive or two...? Damn, can't believe Apple's been beat to market by Panasonic. I think Apple is sitting on product, and it kind of pisses me off.

Tisk tisk, twisting what I said. I never implied it was funny the way you spoke, nor did I laugh. UK thing means UK thing. Just like the way you say aluminum. For the record Canadian english is in more ways like UK english then USA English... We should all be ashamed of ourselves for desecrating each others unique forms of english....right?

hehehe, I know that Billy, nor was I offended in any way.
no one should be ashamed either, it's just odd that people from America or Canada sometimes subconsciously behave like English is their language and that "England" was just named after that fine language developed in the Americas in the last say 200 years. (IS that the correct term for USA&Canada?)
Alas, the British are usually better at English than Americans. It's not like over here in The Netherlands. The Dutch speaking Belgians always beat us at our own language in spelling and grammar contests :-D
Careful, in your attempt to clarify, you're making more enemies.
'Better' at a language? Perhaps first we'd have to agree on what languages are for.
A tool to communicate facts?
A canvas for artistic expression?
A method of conveying emotion?
You see, different cultures rank these purposes differently. Which criteria are you using for declaring one nation 'better' than the another at language?
Last time I flew into Canada, which was two years ago, they let me waltz on in without a passport. So obviously, Canada is a part of the US. Kind of like how Puerto Rico is too.
Because they need to make sure that Microsoft's media player does not become the de facto standard. It is just about that simple.
As much as audiophiles and anti-RIAA folks are correctly upset that Apple made DRM easier to accept, the fact is that mobile video will have a future and that future needs to be open standard. Apple and everyone else other than Dell and maybe Sony needs to keep standards open. That is how MS stays in charge, that is how the iPod has trumped MS so far and that is how portable video needs to go.
Also, if that image (above) is sporting a 3.5" screen, that has to be the smallest hand holding it.
I agree that a video iPod is not needed. The whole reason portable music players have been a hit is because you can use them while you are doing something else, like driving, working, or excercising. You can't (or at least shouldn't, for the sake of everyone) watch videos while you are driving or running. And I don't know many people that can get serious work done while watching TV or movies. Humans suck at multitasking. Apple knows this, and aren't (at least I hope they aren't) spending R&D money on a device that will never catch on.
One reason for small format video is the eventual use of wireless video telephony. This isn't watching movies on a 3" screen, this is watching your friends skiing on a 3" screen, that will be useful and intriguing. You won't be watching while running or driving, you'll watch while sitting and waiting. Most people sit more than they run, and they wait (esp. in LA freeways) more than they drive, so stop the with the dumb "humans don't multitask, thus mobile video has no purpose" argument.
So mobile video WILL be useful when it happens. Now it seems that it probably will happen with phones and not iPods, but I think initially phones will be too small and with too crappy of quality to make sales. So maybe something bigger like pda's and iPods may be a more useful form.

Right.
Maybe it helps if you use another subject:
"Microsoft ARE NOT innovative, they are acquisitive." - johnq
Here is a choice example showing
1. Use of "are"
2. Use of "are" outside of the U.S.
3. Why Microsoft Are Evil
