    Not while there are people alive that remember Vietnam are we going to have the draft again. It would take a whole lot more than what is going on now.



    The party that brings back the draft will basically forego the White House and/or Congress for a few cycles.



    In true Govt fashion, we will just raise the enlistment bonus to a point where the military is "making you an offer you can't refuse." Bribes always work, especially when you dangle thousands of dollars in front of 18 year-old testosterone addicts and tell them they can travel, meet people, and kill them.

    Nope, enlistment, and retention rates are about average right now, but even the Army expects things to change real soon http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/read.php?story_id_key=5820

    Not always. Some people (like myself) would rather seek civilian employment than re-enlist. Even for $50K (I had a $45K offer on the table when I got out). Money isn't everything especially when you're married. Money is nice for a family, but being deployed for 6 monthe to a year away from your family can make the offer of $$ less enticing. Also, the cash is usually given out in silly schemes so you don't get the full alotment on the day you re-enlish. The spreading of the bonus over years make the bonus look less promising. Sure, an infintry man may be chomping at the bit for $50K but a lot of the better trained personel are actually getting out. Another point is Joe Grunt wont see a $50K bonus. Joe Grunt will probably see a measly $5K bonus. The higher bonuses are reserved for officers and enlisted in special fields. Its easy to find a job if you have advanced military training and companies are willing to pay a premium .



    Will we have a draft? Its hard to tell. We're stretched so thin throughout the world that maintaining 130,000 troops in Iraq is difficult. We wont get but one more rotation, after the current rotation, before the military is in dire straits. Getting the third rotation may be a stretch even. God forbid a real security emergency spring up. If we can get a substantial number of troops out of Iraq before the third rotation the likelyhood of a draft will be deminished. If we can't get the men/women home...

    The last time there was a draft (Vietnam), the non coms started shooting their COs and other members of their unit who were 'regular army'.



    A draft now would be a disaster.

    Right now, those being sent to the most dangerous places are kids, many of color, mostly working class, many who only joined the military because they couldn't get jobs. One positive thing about the draft would be to level the playing field somewhat. Kids from middle class and wealthy families would get their chance to fight for our corporations, or perhaps our country . Would that not be a good thing?

    Maybe you can answer this. It's a question I've had for a while but have been unable to answer: does the miilitary do its PR/advertising in-house, or does the DOD contract it all out? I ask because the commercials for the past few years have gotten MUCH better than they used to be ("be all that you can be"??), and now that they're employing multiple forms of media (the by all accounts very good video game).
