Congratz Apple, great move. Listening to demand is a step forward, not backwards. Boring??? No dude, it's not. G4 affordable to the masses

I'm actually guessing that the CRT iMac will be renamed the eMac. So "e" comes to represent "entry level". So we then have 15" and 17" CRT "entry" Macs. Come MWNY, we'll have 15" and 17" LCD iMacs. This should help clear up confusion in the product lineup.

I'm currently typing on an eMac from my school's bookstore, and it's sitting next to an iMac, so I can compare a it.

On a quick glance, it actually seems to take up the about the same amount of space as an LCD iMac. The design seems nice to me, seeing it in person, it's smaller than I expected (as opposed to the iMac, which is larger than it seems in pictures). I can't really do much to test performance, but window resizing in the Finder is fluid (like most G4 systems), and the few applications I've opened have done so quickly. For most schools, it will be much faster than a CRT iMac (which one would expect).

    Some other observations:

The airport card is not easy to steal, despite the apparent ease that the Apple webpage shows. You have to remove a panel that is held by two Phillips screws. So, no casual theft of Airport cards in a school lab.

In regards to the monitor, I notice a flicker at 1280x960. That may be because I've gotten used to the LCD on my Powerbook, but I'm sure my eyes would start hurting after extended use at the max resolution. 1152x864 at 80 hz, however, is definitely usable, with no perceptible flicker. With that, I end my few moments with the eMac (cuz I have to go to class).

The old iMac is still a cool little computer that could have a place in the lineup for the time being, if it's priced accordingly. (MUCH cheaper)

Pretty tough to buy a G3 iMac right now. For $100 more (G3 iMac to eMac) you move from the G3 600 to a G4 700, 32 Mb of video RAM instead of 16, a CD-RW drive that's 3 times as fast, and a FLAT display.

Jesus, who in their right mind would buy a G3 iMac right now? Drop that price to $799 and we'll see...

Anyway, I think it's a pretty nice deal. $300 less than the similarly equipped LCD iMac - that's a nice chunk of change.

I think the it's time for the "Official Death Knell of the iMac G4".

No way in h-e-double hockey sticks is there any reason to buy an iMac now.

The iMac will join the TAM and the Cube as cool designer junk in the Apple Historical archives.

    Dajjal is no G5

Geez. Don't you get it? Think Secret NEVER said it was going to be big, they said just the opposite. The BIG refered to another product announcement by John Sculley (which doesn't seem to have happened). Oy vey!

The LCD iMac is like the Cube in that it now occupies the middle range for price and specs. The difference between the Cube and the iMac LCD is that the low-end models below them are doing different things. The eMac is not pushing into all the specs or more importantly the price range of the iMac, but you couldn't say the same of the old G3 Special Edition iMacs when the Cube was introduced. Those machines occupied the mid-range price and to a lesser degree the specs of the Cube, forcing high prices for the Cube and little apparent performance gains from it. So I agree that the space for these machines is tighter, but I think they are different enough and better-price than the previous Cube fiasco. It does, however put pressure o the iMac's screen size and even processor speed. We might even see the elimination of the lowest-end iMac model to give the eMac some expansion room.

We'll see how it plays out, but I would bet that Apple takes the eMac out of the picture before it takes the iMac out.

Nahh I don't think this will be the death of the G4 imac, its only £300 difference, I think many people would pay just that for the look, superdrive and lcd, I mean I think I would hehe.

I think this a good move by Apple-shows they are listening to us. But only Apple can charge extra for a base. Ever see a 17 inch monitor without a base? I wonder how much they will charge for it?..................................

$59. Source: The Apple Store. Taking two seconds to look something up can usually answer any questions...

I must really be a Machead. I just went to the Apple Store (Web) and thought about puchasing an eMac.

Then it hit me: What colours does it come in?

I'd vote for anything but Flower Power!
